Well, from what I could figure out, if you focus all your points in one skill and it's something that actually works good for you, you may actually be able to do well in the game. Some things are overpowered right now and it seems like they may be getting nerfed, though. It took me several re-rolls to get to where I had something decent and playable, and the very last time, the creator of the game (bencelot) actually did a skill reset for me (preserving the skill points, e.g. I got to redistribute them all) - he's doing this for anyone who asks right now because the game is unbalanced and still being balanced. He did it for quite a few people tonight, and he was on and playing himself for at least several hours.
Right now I've got 10 points in vampirism, and the rest of my points (4+1 synergy point) in Energize. I energize my weapon (usually an M-60, or at the beginning of a round, a lot of grenades - yes, you can energize grenades) so it shoots faster, and shoots faster still with additional kills, and then I use the barrier to tank. The things that kill me tend to be skills like radiate or blade spam used by very high level players, or snipers with a railgun firing from across the map, from time to time (Goes right through barrier!). Of course, a railgun costs $50k and has a very limited supply of ammo. And you won't hit the person if they're moving around (or you will waste your ammo, and it's $25k for a refill). One player took to running me over with a car, then using radiate, and then hitting me with a baseball bat to finally kill me. Yes, the barrier can be that powerful if you aren't wasting your mana on other things, and if your attacker isn't using something capable of doing ungodly amounts of damage per second (And if you are using vampirism to steal HP from enemies at the same time).
One thing that renders most guns pretty much useless, though, is maxed-out bullet time. The bullets just don't reach the target, and with the add-on skills to bullet-time the user can make projectiles that fly out super fast after a couple seconds; they're dodgeable but only if you dodge before they launch from the bullet-time field, which is to say, predict where they are going to go and get out of the way.
And when the alternative to guns is, well, knives (or grenades! But those probably are affected by bullet time too)... And you can't HIT anyone except for bots with knives... (Of course, get enough community points and you get a bat, or
laser sword instead)
I was playing tonight in a large game which the game's developer was also playing in, and his character is extremely difficult to kill (for me, at least)! However, at one point, while he was running towards me and there was a car between us, I managed to kill him in the most spectacular fashion: By
blowing up the car with my M-60 while I was standing right next to it - and I survived the explosion with my health intact by having my barrier active (it absorbed the blast, draining mana instead). The next thing I said was "I can't believe that worked," referring to the fact that it
actually killed him, rather than that I had survived. I had survived point blank car explosions previously by using barrier - they are otherwise quite fatal, however, but somehow I had expected him to be, I don't know,
made of adamantium or something, as hard as it is to kill him normally.
