Jenn picked a book off the highest shelf in her room. On the spine she read
How to Jog.  She ran out of the room and opened the book but found it had absolutely nothing to do with jogging. Explain.......

Wrong dustjacket.

The title actually is "How to joggle building materials to prevent slipping". However, Jenn is a very small girl and the highest shelf is very high, so she could only read a bit of the title, as the shelf was in the way. She had to borrow a ladder to take it.

That's close I guess.
The answer was that it's an encyclopedia of the letters "HOW to JOG"

Wouldn't it then have something to do with jogging, in the final entry at least?

Well, whatever.  That's a pretty cool solution =)

I serve the healer as a shield
I'll hide a victim or a thief
A deception that you carry
In celebration or in grief

I serve the shaman as a doorway
Guard the knight in times of strife
I confer both fear and mystery
And can grant the breath of life

What am I?

Sounds like a chess riddle. Are you a pawn? Could be a rook as well, I guess.

I'm afraid you're incorrect so far,
But please don't wrack your brain.
Compared to all these things, I fear,
I'm far, far more mundane.

If I may...
We are little airy creatures
All of different voice and features
One of us in glass is set,
And the next is found in jet
Another you will see in tin
The forth a box within
If the fifth you pursue
It will never fly from you
