I think it is the Grim Reaper/ Collecter of dead/ near dead souls.

But then I thought it could be greed.

I can't really think much else, but I SHALL try harder!

The hero of the story? That's all that I can really come up with. Though they don't fight the queens and kings, or their young. The heroes also lack time traveling.

Makes it vacuously true, doesn't it?
and a sidekick?
and a true love?
Sidekick= Space. Much tales have been based off space.
True Love= Destiny. I believe there is a term for when you time travel and see the future, and discover it sucks, but you can't do anything about it. Thus time rescues destiny for getting fvcked up.

Mario.

He's fought plenty of Kings and Queens, and lots of their young.

Not so sure how to interpret the next two lines, but whatever.  EDIT: Luigi's had some of his own games, right?

He's fought plenty of demons and aliens and shit.

He's rescued Peach dozens of times, and been back in time in his RPG games.

But he's never done his job - plumbing.

If you dig through the Paper Mario series, I'm sure you'll find some... somewhere...

I think it's probably some kind of protagonist like that in any case, who apparently has a job but is never shown doing it.

Just so someone else doesn't, I'll also suggest Link as an answer.

this is right.
he's fought bowser/the koopalings, with shroob queen as a final boss.
i consider cackletta and dark star demons.
shroobs. need i say more?
SMB3 final world.
peach/pauline.
mario/luigi: partners in time, as well as the obscure "mario's time machine".
and he's never done any plumbing.

Why do you think the pipes only come up when he goes though them?

That's called "breaking pipes", not plumbing :P.

I'll make my own too.  So it'll probably be too easy.  If so, regard it as a free pass to the next person.

You may spend a long time searching for it
Even though you know exactly where it can be found

Sometimes you've already been given it already
So just need to show that it's there

Other times you'll need to get it yourself
Using that which has been provided

It can be very important to your life
Or it can be just a game

What is it?
