That all depends whats your computer specs

but its a given that the 5x7 will be more laggy due to it just being bigger but how laggy will depend on your computer

Generally 4x4 or smaller is recommended in my opinion.

If your computer is fairly powerful, 6x6 or its non-square equivalent sizes should be OK.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I play on 2x2, or 2x3 sometimes, with 30-50 z levels, and by the end game it crawls down to 150 fps. I have no idea why you would want to play on 5x7.

I was getting a somewhat playable FPS out of a 10x10 embark, but there is simply no godly reason to ever need to, so I'm back to using 6x6, currently for a megaproject.  If you've got a half-decent CPU, you shouldn't see any real lag with a 5x7 embark, at least not until you get into the high 2-digit dorf numbers.  Do the usual to keep FPS at the maximum possible (resource and pet management, etc) and it should be fine.

Bear in mind that each embark square is something like 48 x 48 x ~200 or so, so anything in excess of 5x5 is going to be big enough for even the most ridiculous projects.  The only real reason for a huge embark is to get multiple interesting geographical features into the same game.

2x2.  I like the intensity of the wildlife being packed closer together and the improved FPS.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

DOWN to 150 by the end? You using a cray ubercompter or somthin? By Armoks beard - if i get 150 fps at the start on 3 by 3 its a good thing. By the end over 100 or so z's with 100 or so dorfs i can expect less than 20.

Lolz. 150 FPS he calls a crawl? Eh? 150 fps is faster then even embark with default init.

A 5x7 is probably going to be largely unneccessary for almost anything you could do, and will be quite laggy under normal conditions.

If, for some reason, you really want to have a large embark, you might want to consider removing two of the cavern layers, so that the game is less deep, z-axis wise, and has less GCS throwing webs over every last tile of cavern, and you should probably breach into it fairly early, and sweep up.  Even if you don't see them, creatures in the caverns will be present and active and chewing up FPS and memory, leading to slowdowns if you don't clean the caverns up relatively quickly.

I got 20 FPS with a 6x6 embark, with a 4x4 I get 100 FPS until I get population in the triple digits. Then it goes down quickly.
