0.31.12, reasonably bug free?
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:46:46 pm »

I've noticed that 0.31.12 has been around for more than a month now.  I haven't really tried to play it yet, because I assumed that it like the ones before it was riddled with bugs to the point that you'd nearly always find a showstopper somewhere(like a completely broken armed forces system, etc).  But since this version has been around for a reasonably long time now, perhaps it is stable.

What is the opinion of those that have played it for a while?  What are the parts of the game that are still buggy, if any?

Due to the sheer scope of the game combined with the fact that it's just one guy doing all the coding work, Dwarf Fortress is a nest of bugs in all of its incarnations.  That said 0.31.12 is the most stable of the 0.31.x series (so far).  The hospital and military systems are still largely unworkable thanks to the mass of glitches surrounding them (unless you're insanely patient and micromanage like crazy), but the base game is still very much intact and doesn't crash much (if at all; I've never seen 0.31.12 crash, personally).

I have a severe large roach infestation.... :p

Anyhow remind me of the critical gamestopping bugs.
I remember
1-military madness
2-M.A.S.H. lazyness
3-mountains of trash.
4-Noble and other positions deleted on death of dwarf holding it.

military is more practical in equiping itself now, though there are some mis-match issues that can persist, at least recruits will grab some stuff and go to training and of training at reasonable schedules. (Provided that about half the squadsize is scheduled to be active.
Training sessions no longer take for ever and dwarves do learn from them now.
I enjoyed watching my recruits wrestling and trowing about eachother, clothes etc. active sparring I have not really observed yet, but maybe that requires all squadmembers to have about equal levels of expertise.
(Don't give raw recruits individual choice of weapons, they will try them all, becoming dabbling at a lot, but good at nothing much!)
Using the <S> squad orders system, a squad needs to be ac<t>ivated and sending it on a mission like Kill or Move can result in upset dwarves if you forget about them.

The hospital seems to work reasonably well, though restricting a doctor to a hospital burrow won't neccessarily force him/her to perform surgery any sooner. Mixed succes is reported for plaster casts, but at least a bruised toe is no longer reason for eternal bedrest. (no guarantees though)

Debris/refuse of some non-compostable creatures like beetles has a chance of being removed on seasonal change.

Haven't had much unexpected deaths in my nobles list since I changed to 12....maybe I'm adapting.

Letting your computer go into hibernation while running DF will still make it crash on saving, but this will not corrupt the save. so no foul.

Stable or not, our wet and warty Overlord is getting ready to release a new version any time now. New and improved features focusing more on adventure mode though.

I don't know of a single bug in the military as of now. It works perfectly for me.

The hospital seems to work, mostly. Things seem to happen at their own pace, though.

The only bug that really bugs ( 8)) me is the soap bug... Where you'll get job cancellation spam from soap cleaning. Doing without soap isn't a big problem, though.

Really, the only major issues remaining are problems with the nobles, a few bugs in healthcare, and the kill-order system with the military still sucks.  However, none of these are really game-changing; you can easily build a thriving fort in any environment.  Chances are, they'll be resolved entirely in another release or two.

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

What?
There are no bugs left that break either the military or the healthcare system. There may be bugs, but even the few bugs with the healthcare are far less problematic and frustrating that the complete lack of healthcare in 40d.

31.12 is totally playable. Bugs left at this point are mostly just mild annoyances. The only reason to continue playing 40d is out of nostalgia for the old terrain features.

The only bugs I've encountered are the thing with the hospital not stocking soap (and dwarves not using it properly themselves either), the fact that the only way to get gypsum plaster to work is to buy bags of it from traders, and the military sometimes running in the opposite direction when given a 'kill' order.  (telling them to 'move' near the enemy works though, then they attack it).

Really, apart from the outstanding issues like pathfinding lag and dropped clothing items never getting cleaned up, this game is quite playable.

Oh, there is also one little glitch where creatures can get in through fortified walls that let in water/magma.  That's a bit annoying.  I had a bunch of slugmen in my cistern last night, which was silly, and a magma man roaming my pump stack, which was alarming.  Oddly though, the magma man didn't seem to want to attack anyone.   Just wandered around and destroyed 1 door.  Other than that, pretty mellow for a dude made of FIRE.

I haven't tried the Linux version (yet), but certainly the Windows version works fine.

The only significant bugs I have encountered so far are:

Military - Sometimes soldiers don't want to get dressed properly. This can usually be fixed by just waiting or resetting their uniform.
Hospital - If the surgery table/traction bench is not next to the bed then the doctor will cancel treatment: patient not resting
UI - When linking floodgates the wrong one will be highlighted in the main window.

I haven't once encountered a game-breaking bug so far.

31.12 does run reasonably well, and the worst melee military bugs are fixed. I have heard that some people have problems with marksdwarf training while others seem to manage it just fine. I have yet to try it, really. There are still hospital problems (among them that dwarves don't actually use the hospital stock), and dwarves don't respect most room assignments (dining room assignments seem to work). Combat balance seems to be still a work in progress.

That said, the month-long lack of a new release had more to do with Toady working on a bigger project that'll allow more NPCs (not more historical figures) and that is a prerequisite for a number of near-future dev items that he needed to get out of the way early. That was helped by the fact that no emergency bugfix became necessary, but bugfixes will continue.

i've never gotten an economy going someone told me that was bugged, and i've never gotten a king someone also told me it was bugged.

I've never had any military problems..... at all, ever.  Except for when moving don't use "kill" just "move" them near the monster you want to kill... i mean ya gota use kill if someone is going nutso in your fort though, but just use move for military works fine.

Anyone who says this doesn't have bugs is blind. I just recently did a save and when I came back my military was empty and none of the dorfs could be added again.

I'm glad I never encountered that one...

Now, in regards to the nobles/economy: I've yet to get anything besides the duchess and the king, so AFAIK there's no way to get them working in 0.31.12.  It may have something to do with the fact that the king isn't exactly a "noble"; he never makes mandates and his idle status is "No Job" as opposed to the purple-colored "Noble" status seen with the baron/count/duke.

UI - When linking floodgates the wrong one will be highlighted in the main window.

Actually, more specifically, the correct floodgate (or anything you want to link to) is highlighted, but the window zooms to the previous object on the list.

The bed handling ("I'll just crash wherever, man") is pretty annoying, as is the floodgate linking.
