Keeping the pets out?
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:41:27 am »

Ok....
I am making the training room because I spotted a friggin goblin snatcher
I want to ask that how do I keep the pets outta that room?
They will just get slaughtered
and another one would be
Will a squad of 10 men with medium skill levels of military can hold off a goblin siege?
no traps present as of yet

Build a door and change the settings on it to forbid pets, however it doesnt work all that well, the buggers just sit outside it and wait for a dwarf to open the door then rush through.

Sounds like you already have the solution, you just don't realize it :)

Engraved on the item is an image of a cat and a dwarf in obsidian.  The cat is on fire.  The dwarf is laughing.

If you are talking about a pet of one of your military dwarves, then it will be extremely difficult to prevent that pet from entering the room.  If it's some other dwarf's pet, then as long as your room is out of the way those pets shouldn't go in anyway.

By the way, when you say "training room", I assume you mean one of those rooms with the spikes/spears poking up and down from the floor?  Because if you just mean a barracks for training, then pets won't get hurt from that.

Not so much an exploit, but a feature.

It depends on how well they are armed and armored, and the weapons the siegers have, but I wouldn't count on it.  A full-blown siege probably has lashers and/or archers and right now they are both ridiculously deadly.  You'd need at least full steel armor with close-to if not maxxed out Dodge/Shield to really be safe against a squad of lashers or archers.  Build lots of traps.  Better yet, build lots of cage traps so you can:

Use captured goblins as training dummies for your military.  Bulk hide & dump all your cages containing prisoners.  Go into your stocks screen and un-dump everything but the weapons.  Then un-hide everything again.  Your dwarfs will come along and disarm your prisoners.  Build the cage out into their training room, hook it up to a lever then pull the lever.  The prisoner will be released but unarmed. Your dwarves will have their way with him.  If they are sword, spear or axedwarves you can temporarily give them wooden training weapons so the fight lasts longer and they get more experience.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

Tie the owners pet in the owners room.

How?  It doesn't seem possible to chain a pet -- just a stray.
