SHAD0Wdump Steam Gaming Group
« on: September 01, 2010, 01:09:47 am »

After the speed at which my Warcamp game ran for the first round. It donned on me how great some of my games could work in a live setting. So I devised that I could set up a steam group to organize games.
I'll be using such services as typewith.me (Janet uses this for her shipping wall) to run these games.

It's a steam feature that provides an additional method of communication between large numbers of people. Stuff such as announcements, a small bulletin board, and a group chat are provided. As well as a list of all members of the group, allowing easy additions to people's friends lists within the group.

Why not just use IRC for it? Clients for it for any system and you don't have to sign up for anything.

::) Read what Shad0w said. Steam groups provide much more than just chat.

Anyways. I would join in.

I would join.  I'm always on Steam anyway.
It'd be fun to play some co-op games with forumites too.
I think this is a good idea for speeding up the Warcamp game.

I don't see why we couldn't join the Grapefruit Games Group for this, unless Janet has a problem with somebody else being quite active with it?

Well, the JGGG is somewhat less active these days(read, practically stagnant), and having my own group would mean I'd have more control. I would need that sort of control for the sort of things I'm going to be doing.

Besides, you can look to the JGGG for involved tabletop games like DnD or Maid. While my group would be focused on custom designed games and party-ish games. More simple and streamlined.

 Anyway, I'm making it.

Steam may have more options, but it only runs on Windows. And you have to sign-up for an account to use it. IRC doesn't.

Steam is Mac now too, they ported a bunch of the Source games over with it.  You could be playing Portal!

Edit: Unless you're running ubuntu Linux, in which case, I think people have had fairly good luck with Wine and Steam.

Using wine is not the same as running a program on linux. And there's still the issue of having to sign-up.

That's true, yeah.  But if you have Wine already installed then installing Steam looks pretty easy.  They say they're working on a Linux client as well, and since they released a Mac one already, I believe them.

The sign-up isn't anything special, just an email address.  They don't spam (they make more money from happy gamers).

I would still be running Ubuntu, but my work involves using in-house windows tools.  My desktop would still be windows for the games, haha.
