The trade depot thing works every time to get a bucket empty. I've tried it. You will have to clean up the spilled stuff on the floor later, but it gets you empty buckets.

Thanks. I'll crack open DF in a bit and try that. I'll loose the lye, but I can always chop down more trees.

You won't lose the lye if you don't forbid it - just forbid the water in the bucket and you should be good to go.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

In case this wasn't mentioned, you can also request lye from the trade caravan.  It is delivered in buckets and is ready for soap-making.

Fixed that for you.

Oh nice. That makes my life a whole lot easier.

^.^

And yeah, in the future, I'm just gonna make a request for lye from traders. More barrels, less trouble, and I can trade away useless stone in the form of trinkets and whatnot.

You can turn tallow into roasts, and then trade the roasts for lye.

That defeats the entire purpose of ordering lye.

Also...

KojaK has been ecstatic lately. He enjoyed an effective method of emptying buckets of water lately. He was happy to see Urist McSoapy back to work lately.

:D It's also useful for getting to use all those barrels you bought that are have full of Fooblood.

I ended up trading the barrels of fooblood back to the next caravan (humorously enough, the vampires elves ;)).  I'm going to have to remember the forbid-contents-move-barrel/bucket-to-trade-depot emptying method from now on. Thank you!

How much soap do you really need? Just a few bars of soap will last almost forever. Its only used in hospitals.

I actually wrote a dfhack tool for emptying out buckets of water by boiling them away, in case you're interested in a way of emptying buckets in the absence of caravans - the source code is posted in the dfhack thread in the modding forum. Trouble is, it can actually be useful to keep some buckets of water around so that your bone doctors can apply plaster casts (since they bug out when trying to actually fill up buckets themselves).

I'm not aggravated by my dwarfs leaving buckets of water around. I'm aggrevated when Urist McLyeMaker decides that the best bucket to use is not one of my plethora of empty ones, but one with stuff in it already.

I see a great many uses for buckets with water.

So if I understand this correctly, if I buy barrels of blood, then forbid the liquid inside and have the barrels hauled away to a stockpile, my dwarves will empty the contents onto the trade depot?  So I'll have a blood red depot sitting in pools of blood?

There are probably easier dorfier ways to accomplish that than buying the blood in barrels, but yeah, whatever works. :)

I'm not sure if the game is smart enough to know that blood stored in a barrel translates to a pool of blood when dumped out.  You might just end up with a pile of some weird 'blood' object sitting there instead.

Nope. It becomes a puddle, sort of. You can't get your dwarves to put the booze or lye back into barrels if you pull this trick on them, either. Unfortuately. *sigh*. That's how i discovered it.
