Tried that too. They won't use buckets with stuff in them. I got:

UristMcDumbass cancels fill pond: job item lost or destroyed x100

Seriously. I got this at least three times every frame. It wasn't like a 'no job' thing happens between. Every frame he'd try at least three times, cancel the job, and try again.

I forbade(word?) every bucket that was normal, leaving only the ones with lye and water.
Oh, I meant dumping water before making lye, the lye/water-mixed buckets are useless for every purpose. And yes, forbid, forbade.

Ah. Thanks mate.

So tell me... how does water end up in buckets? Is the water left over from other jobs?

I haven't actually seen it in action, but I think it's from bringing water to sick dwarves who don't drink it all. Bastards.

You might want to try other permutations of the forbid/dump trick.  For example, could you forbid the water in the bucket (but not the lye or the bucket itself) and then have the bucket moved to another stockpile?  If you can't forbid the water directly, maybe you could do it through mass-forbidding (and un-forbidding the bucket)?  Or perhaps through the stocks menu (if your detail level is high enough)?

If you do figure out some way to do it, please let us know.  (Yeah, I'm too lazy to try it out myself right now.  Maybe later...)

Have the bucket brought to a trade depot. This will cause the contents of the bucket to be dumped out onto the floor. The bucket itself will be empty when it is brought to the trade depot.

Dwarves bring food/water to dwarves that are visibly hungry/thirsty, presumably in an effort to make sure that patients and prisoners don't die of hunger/thirst (though they inevitably still do).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I will try this.

Also, I asked this before, but...

Will the contents of a magma-safe bucket be incinerated in magma?

I have found that if you have the contents of a barrel forbidden, and then dwarves haul that barrel to a stockpile or the depot, that the contents of the barrel end up on the ground. (argh!)
This may be useful to you in emptying out the buckets, though I have only seen this work with barrels.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

couldnt you runa bunch of kitchens and convert the tallow into edible meals?

iirc tallow shows up on the kitchen screen, so if everything else is forbidden they should just make -cat tallow roast- x250

It does, and they will. However, I specifically went in and told my dwarfs not to cook tallow. I have three legendary growers, food is no issue.

I just want more soap. v.v

The trade depot thing works every time to get a bucket empty. I've tried it. You will have to clean up the spilled stuff on the floor later, but it gets you empty buckets.

Also you can just cook the tallow into roasts.

Thanks. I'll crack open DF in a bit and try that. I'll loose the lye, but I can always chop down more trees.
