SO. MUCH. TALLOW.
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:44:23 pm »

So I have an entire stockpile devoted solely to lye and tallow. 106 barrels to be exact. Stocks page says 1014 bits of tallow (minus about 100 or so globs of fat that have yet to be rendered).

And I have two wood furnaces, an ashery, and a soap maker's workshop. Despite having 34 things of lye, my dwarfs refuse to make soap. I believe it's because all the lye is still in the workshop. They refuse to move the lye to a barrel, where I can actually use it.

Upon closer inspection, I found that all the buckets in the workshop not only contain lye, but various amounts of water as well (how that works is anybody's guess).

The only think I can think of doing is mass forbidding buckets, and designating a hole to be a pond, then recovering the buckets in the workshop.

Time for !!SCIENCE!!

If anybody has a better suggestion, please, let me know.

The best way I've found to make your dwarves move lye into barrels is to simply have very few buckets.

Methinks you need empty barrels, my friend.  Dorfs won't make soap unless the lye is in a barrel, and won't transfer it from a bucket to a barrel unless they have an empty one to move it to - and even then they tend to be reluctant to.

I currently count 20 empty barrels sitting in my furniture stockpile. That's only what I can count. All 3 of my furniture stockpiles are full, I probably have a bunch more sitting around my kitchens and stockpile just for prepared food and booze. I also checked the stocks menu and counted 40 empty barrels (both the name and checked with (v)iew. No contents) before I got tired of counting. I have a plethora of empty barrels.

EDIT:

Doctors won't use the bucket, nor will my haulers fill it with water, or will either profession use the water inside. It's not an 'empty' bucket since it contains lye.

You could try designating the water and lye - not the bucket it's in, just the contents - for dumping. I did so with 'water laced with mud' via the z-stocks menu in my game, and did eventually go from having two units of muddy water to having one.

Tried that already. I tried dumping the lye, and dumping the water from within the bucket. No good. No 'dump item' jobs were created (I have my army of haulers working on clearing a bunch of areas, so that was the only way I could check). Unless dumping items or liquids doesn't create a 'dump item' job in the job list?

There is apparently a bug where they wont make soap unless you use the manager.  Try that...

Urist McSoaper cancels make soap: needs lye-bearing barrel x30

That's how I found the problem in the first place. I CAN make soap, I have about 30 bars in my hospital. I just can't make any more until I get that damn lye into barrels. I can make more buckets, but that's just a waste of wood (making the bucket, then making more lye to fill it).

Sorry, mixed buckets are bugged as hell and can't be used for anything. They just lie in the workshop and rot. Keep a stockpile of buckets next to the ashery and check them manually for water, forbid the ones with water in them before making lye. It's the only workaround I've found.

So there's no way to empty a mixed bucket?

Lye making works sometimes, soap making even more seldom - like making casts of plaster powder (and storing plaster powder or soap in the hospital ;)). These two workflows seem to be somewhat messed up.

Will the contents of a magma-safe bucket be incinerated?

Hmmm...

I knew from the very beginning I'd end up doing !!science!!

Couldn't you melt/burn a full bucket?

Remember, folks, magma is the solution for EVERYTHING.

Not that I know of, dumping liquids just doesn't work. Maybe having a pool with constant orders for filling? But I don't know how to do that without just eating up work time and all available buckets.

Tried that too. They won't use buckets with stuff in them. I got:

UristMcDumbass cancels fill pond: job item lost or destroyed x100

Seriously. I got this at least three times every frame. It wasn't like a 'no job' thing happens between. Every frame he'd try at least three times, cancel the job, and try again.

I forbade(word?) every bucket that was normal, leaving only the ones with lye and water.
