Scrolls.
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:22:07 pm »

I was thinking of adding scrolls into DF.
So you'd make paper, then use graphite or maybe dye and water to make the scrolls. I was wondering if it's possible to have it record history, like how coins and engravings do. Is that possible?

I would love to record the history. I can't seem to get it to work though.

What you want to do is actually impossible to do right now. All the things that record events are hardcoded at the moment (Like engraving, images, figurines, statues, etc). The closest we can get is to make scroll or book custom items and then use our imaginations.  :'(

Couldn't you just have the 'scrolls' as an item type that is engravable, and have the 'pen' a gem, or similar, that is already hardcoded to be allowed to engrave the 'scrolls'?

I guess I could make it function like coins somehow. Would that work?

No. Coins are hardcoded.

I use vellums to make tomes which are used in training, that's the most I've got from this idea.

You can decorate cloth or leather items with images, which would let you make tapestries of sorts.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Yeah, wouldn't a new cloth item that can have an image sewn on it called "tapestry" work?

You could also make a sewable leater item out of skin - illuminated vellum scrolls.
