I'm split between more lasers (to destroy incoming missiles) and a second ship.

I think I'll go for a missile frigate, she can fight with her missile, and protect the main ship with lasers. I take it the laser battery is mounted on a turret and can fire 360°?

Also, what are grid defense point?

I can't say 'no' to fighters. I vote for them.

Well, we need more info, how many fighters? What armement do they carry? Do they have a shield, or are they just laser-fodder?

Yes to the first one. A point defense grid= better chance of taking out missiles and a bonus to shooting down torpedoes

6 fighters, equipped with low level lasers. no shields but are hard to take out and can get through point defense with less damage to them than missiles. They can also be given specific orders (Target engines/weapons/torpedoes). Downside is limited fuel and destroyers absolutley wreck them.

Can't you read? Fighters are going to get destroyed at the first destroyer or laser-mounted enemy. Definitely destroyer.

After some thinking, I changed my mind: Destroyer.

It provides both great defensive and decent offensive capabilities. A cruiser will likely never make a particularly good carrier, and we could just upgrade to a dedicated carrier or get some escort carriers later.

How many lasers and missile launchers are currently in each broadside, anyway? Enlarged Battery sounds awfully tempting if it doubles the ship's laser mounts. Same firepower as the destroyer and presumably much harder to kill, although losing out on the enhanced PD hurts.

We currently have 1 missile launch and 1 laser battery per side. the current launcher fires 6 missiles per salvo

You acquire a destroyer for you fleet. It's bad luck for a ship to leave port without a name, so it'll need one of those.

You can also choose between two missions
1) The coordinates you retrieved from the derelict vessel point to an abandoned mining post within the asteroid. scope out the area for a future assault. Engage only if fired upon.
allied support: 1 escort ship

2) Command has picked up a bit of activity traveling from the asteroid belt to the Ferrus-Volk Jump Gate. Lie in wait and ambush unauthorized traffic. there is some legitimate traffic, so watch out for civilians.
Allied support: none

Allied support basically means "number of ships not under player control"

The first one. It should be more prestigious, and we won't need to worry about being trigger happy.
