Where did my animal men go?

So I popped into my DF again today, made a world, and decided I was going to do some adventuring.  Went down into the caverns and wandered for about 4 hours.  I have yet to see a single animal-man camp. 

Are they out of the current version?  Or is there a setting or RAW somewhere I've messed up?

Try leaving the local area enough times to have random items litter about. If you find any animal people body parts it means they're either dead or there with GCS.

Good point, I think the elves stopped keeping their animal men pets around, and they couldn't survive in the wild.
