Armok is simply a reference to the first game in the series that was never completed, he may never have anything to do with DF.

Armok is the god of blood and Armok comes from one of Toady_One's old games that determined if an arm was attached to a creature, hence arm_ok. Therefore Armok isn't a god but actually the consciousness of all creatures in DF and perhaps RL.

No, I am Armok.

In name only, I'll take joy in pointing out.

Crap! I almost believed him too!

In a way, though, you could consider Armok to be the deific version of Urist - it's the generic term for any dwarven god you aren't specifying.

I like the "Armok is the RNG" idea.  Seems to.. fit.

The RNG is chaos.   Blood is a substance of life, which in itself, exemplifies a state of order.

One could assert that blood signifies the transitional state between order and entropy, of course, but that is easily rebutted by bringing up the fact that the RNG merely drives the procedural nature of the game.

Actually, I think of nature in general as a state of chaos (and that's not a unique line of thought, either, but a common one throughout history, albiet for different reasons).

Nature isn't just a state of rest or a single force, it's a billion different things competing against each other, and generally managing to hover around a given point because that is where all the different forces acting out manage to cancel out the other forces.  It's like a pendulum - knock it one way, and it just comes back the other, and gradually moves back to where it wants to be.

Order is easily destroyed or knocked over.  Chaos goes back to what it wants to be, and makes it look like it's order just because no one thing has enough strength to upset the chaos.

Armok is the God of Blood. Some think this means carnage and war- but this is not exclusively true.

Blood is associated with passion, birth, bravery, and hope as it is with hatred, death, cowardice, and fear. Wherever hearts beat (or, as the case may be, minds think, engines thrum, or strange alien organs reciprocate, for Armok is all-encompassing) with drama, wherever heroes and villains clash, wherever stories start or end, that is where Armok is.

Ah, here's my old little tale on the subject.

Nice. Isn't his blood supposed to be magma or something? That would also make some sense. Or if magma is a 'type' of blood, that perhaps being the blood of the planets and perhaps another embodiment of chaos.

IT'S ALIVE!!! But yea, it would be a kind of awesome if expected twist if upon the release of 1.0.0 or w/e the player is revealed as Armok.

Toady is Armok's slave (as are we all), not the other way around.

For example, why hasn't the infinitely-generating blood pool bug been fixed?

Because Armok doesn't want it to be.

he's more a deification of our desires to do crazy and/or mindlessly destructive things, which in itself makes things fun. Or Fun. Depends on what happens.

I like this. Armok isn't the game, OR the player, but the actual process of playing the game.
