Everyone weight in on your suggestion for what to have on embark.

My suggestion is this:  Minimal on the dwarves and skills.  Those will build up.
3 miners with picks.
1 boss (appraise, judge, negotiate, build, or whatever)
1 stonecrafter
1 mechanic
1 mason/carpenter

1 male dog, 2 female dogs
about 30 or so logs
an anvil
gobs of plump helmet seeds, like 70 of them
15 or so of the other 3 seed types for underground farming/drinks.
lots of booze.
lots of food.

The rest can be made or traded for (like an axe for a woodcutter)

I'd say only 2 miners and 3 picks. Mining could easily be learned by an inexperienced dwarf. Also, since there are no elves, getting caged animals might be a bit harder. So a breeding pair of cats would work for skin, bones and meat harvesting.

A farmer/brewer might be a good idea.

Sign me on. The succession games I applied for go REALLY SLOW.::) Also, one week turns are best.
Also. Can I be dwarfed as the engineer if he already hasn't been claimed?

You seriously intend to last in a succession specifically intended for newbies for half a year with 30 logs without an axe and instead take an ANVIL?  ???

Um... sure?   That's just my suggestion!  I'm open to alternatives.  Heck, Fivex is going to be kicking this thing off, I believe, so there's really nothing stopping him from just sorting it out and embarking.

Besides, what do we need wood for, besides some beds and a few bins?

...a few barrels, a backup material in case of Diggor Mortis, training weapons and components for pumps... Sure, nothing at all. :)

Well I made my suggestion back there but 3 miners is way too much! You need a woodcutter! Just a miner is too little so make it miner/stoneworker. Mechanics could also work with metal since we are near a volcano. Stone and woodworking don't go together as it's literally impossible to have a dwarf both a miner and a woodcutter.
So here is my opinion 1 more time:
5 miner, 3 mason, 2 engraver
5 miner, 3 mason, 2 engraver
5 woodcutter, 5 carpenter
4 mechanic, 3 furnace operator, 3 metalsmith
2 diagnostician, 2 suturer, 2 bone doctor, 2 surgeon, 2 wound dresser
2 brewer, 2 animal trainer, 2 butcher, 2 grower, 2 herbalist
2 building designer, 2 appraiser, 2 organizer, 2 record keeper, 2 leader

1 male dog, 1 female dog
1 female kitten, 1 male kitten
an iron anvil
25 plump helmet spawn
50 fish
50 drink
3 copper pickaxes
1 training axe
3 cave spider silk ropes
I hope I'm not missing anything. Any leftover money goes on fish, drink and plump helmet seeds. If enough money is leftover then get another pair of dogs.

Yes! Use the current version!
3 days is excellent but about the timezone... We need to think a better way for that! I have no idea what timezone I am in or how to calculate the differences or something...
I believe that this board is good enough!

Oh wow! 3 posts while I was typing that. I must be getting slow.

Hey, put me on a spot, if you can. I'm a graduate of the "complete and utter newbie's guide" so at least I know the basics, but I haven't ventured past my tutorial fortress yet! I'd love to take part in a succession game!

Welcome to the mess, goodguy3 and Canalan.

Ottottott seems pretty motivated and his starting setup seems pretty good to me.

Anyone else want to pipe in?

Ottottott, you're in Estonia right?  That's Eastern European Summer Time, which is GMT +2/+3.  8 hours difference between your time zone and east coast USA time.

Whatever time zone we do, we need to figure out a deadline for submission.  Not to be a time nazi about it, but just to be certain that nobody procrastinates away other people's turns.

How about this, Lets say the turn starts monday morning at midnight Eastern Standard Time (that's 8AM monday to you, ott).  Whoever was playing would have three days, until wednesday night at midnight to do their turn and upload the file. (8am wednesday in your time, ott)    So the deadline should be X time (midnight EST was my suggestion) or when the next player is awake and looking for the file.

Oh wait I gotta get this straightened out. This may seem like a foolish question, but whatever. Tilesets don't completely mess the game up, do they? I'm using the tileset that the newbie guide used.

I don't think that tilesets mess up the DF data.  Anyone know for sure?

I am 99.604% sure that tilesets do nothing bad to the game. It's just reskinning it. I have never ever heard of any problems with that.

I'll have a go. I have only played one sucession game before. 3 day turnaround is good for me..
