Well now this doesn't seem all that bad.  The dwarves mutter about goblins lurking about, so although my instinct was to build a drawbridge across that channel to give access to our trade depot, I think that the first order of business will be to construct some inexpensive defenses.  I've ordered the construction of large numbers of mechanisms and planned the digging of a zig zag section of tunnel to funnel any invaders through some traps.

I wonder if we can channel some of that magma down here to the surface.  It would make a mighty fine welcome for any goblins that happened along.  Ahh, perhaps later.

We have no spare barrels for storing drinks, and the dwarves refuse to simply dig a giant underground lake and fill it with booze.  I've ordered them to seperate the food from the drink, in order to free up barrels, but I'm not sure if it will work.  In the meantime, the goblins continue to lurk outside.  Our trade depot is useless to us right now, so I've ordered the digging of a new depot along with a large tunnel - I intend to create a drawbridge across it in order to keep it from being a highway for goblin invaders.  With some luck, once completed, it will attract a caravan.  We desperately need to either import some wood, or get out there and cut some trees down.

The goblins sit by the river, waiting for us to come out, or an opportunity for them to come in.

With little choice but for us to remain locked away inside the fort and die of thirst, or to attempt to lure the goblins into the traps, I ordered the exterior door to be unlocked.  Unfortunatly, it seems that some of the dwarves either forgot that there were goblins outside, or were so overcome by thirst that they ran outside..

MORE goblins?!??!

So many losses...

At great cost of life, most of the goblins were killed, and the rest fled.

The tunnel to the new trade depot is completed.  The survival of this fort depends on new migrants and a trade caravan, now.

The dwarves continue to spiral into bedlam.

If we can just keep our enemies outside while we....  kobolds ambushed us INSIDE the fort?!?!!!?

The few remaining dwarves run for their lives, but there is really no place to hide..

It was a very very long, lonely winter.  It is as though the animals have taken over the fort.  Hoards of them, dogs, cats, horses, roam the dark, empty halls.  I've done my best to avoid the last surviving dwarf, Bayar, as I'm not sure whether he is still sane or not - and in either case, I'm afraid he might kill me.

It is the first of the year now, and I kept my promise, but now I'm done living in this pit of despair.  Bayar seems intent on remaining here, either to die from thirst or from attack, but he seems to hold out hope that a new wave of immigrants will arrive and revitalize the fortress.

I don't know who will chronicle what remains of this place.  I don't know that anyone would want to.

So.... one lone dwarf left.

This was a crummy turn of events, and to be perfectly honest, I tried playing it three different times, and this was the best outcome.  I can't help but wonder if bayar (the player, not the dwarf) discovered this and quit trying.  Funny that he is the last living dwarf.

Canalan, you're up next, and frankly, I wouldn't blame you if you threw in the towel.  This fort is dead unless some immigrants arrive fairly shortly.  Then again, if you can turn it around, that's quite an accomplishment!

So, here is the save.

Let me know if we're going to soldier on and hope for something good.

Not my call, of course, but I say we should try and salvage it.

...Battlefailed managed. :P

Try our best to survive. that's the point, i think. Was there any trading last year ? If not we probably won't get many migrants. So what happened ? did nobody build a still ? We have a silly amount of plants and no booze at all ?

On the left a cannon which shoots dwarf children into the sun, on the right, a massive pit full of magma charred dwarfs and elves.

two stills, actually.  No barrels though.  No wood either.  There is an axe around somewhere for sure.  Maybe ole Bayar can grab the axe, chop a couple trees, make a few barrels, and brew up some booze!

I agree, I would love to see us continue to try to make the fort survive.   No trade last year, so that makes me sad about the likelihood of migrants :(

Canalan, let me know if you intend to pick up the save or not.  If so, great.  If not, we'll go to the next person and so on.

Oh me, two succession forts forts at once?
Bring it on.

Holy hell, only one left? Can I abandon and reclaim?

Use the previous save, unless you really want to use this one.
I would say abandoning and then reclaiming is okay, but you would have to ask Jerm, although I say you should at least try to survive without doing that.

I wouldn't recommend using the save from the beginning of the year.  I tried it three times, and each time was decimated by goblins and/or thirst.

I'd love to see if it could come back from the brink of extinction, but if it gets no migrants during the year, then yeah, I suppose we could just abandon and reclaim.
