Seeing as wagons are bugged and don't show up, caravans can go down 1 tile stairways.  So that part isn't necessarily hard.

Is there an effective way to kill off the initial demon swarm besides a ridiculously well trained military?  (And does that even work?)

You get a custom death message if you fall in them in adventure mode.

personally i killed off my first 100 or so demons through using cave in traps... many cave in traps. and lots of reloading.

I don't use traps, but the most effective way to fight the demons so far has been in crowded and turning corridors. Since many of them have really good ranged attacks, you'll want to minimize any open space and the number of dwarves they can reach. I also used loads and loads of war animals as meat shields, to buy time. I still lost almost all of my army of 80 dwarves in steel plate (no adamantine, I breached hell way too early) and half the civilians, but it did work.

Yeah what is all this talk of 3 tile wide ramps? Wagons aren't even working.

Out of curiosity, how many demon types are in your world?

I'm not sure. How do I check that?

By the way, can caravans still come if the depot is marked as inaccessible on shift+D now that wagons are gone? I just assumed that, but I haven't actually tried it and I depend on trade for wood so I'd rather not.

Well judging from your response you didn't tinker with it on worldgen. In which case what size region did you use, since the defaults vary per size?

It's on page 2. I'll put it in the first post too. It'd be funny if people used it to build different Hell Forts :) I'd love to see the results.

Nope, I'm pretty sure I used a large region but it was a while ago, the only thing I changed was to increase the minimum number of volcanoes and I also increased the number of good- and evil-aligned squares. I've seen maybe 10 different kinds of demons, fiends and beasts of different kinds and demons of fire and salt mainly. And toxic squirrels. God damn the toxic squirrels.

Build a church to Armok in hell. It's what he would want.

Export the local image and then open the world gen file. Demon Number is a bit down the page.

And caravans will still show up so long as there is any access to the Depot. If the road isn't three tiles wide, then wagons will bypass you whenever they make it back into the game, but pack animals will always be able to go there.

Thanks for the info. And [DEMON_NUMBER:52]

That's the default number then. Huh. With that many demons, your dwarves should have been up to their necks in them. Either they're not all spawning correctly or you hit the HFS jackpot by getting only mundane, easily killed demons.

Have you seen any demons made out of inorganic materials like salt?

I'm using my powers of telepathy to guess that there were salt demons. I wonder where I could find confirmation...

Also, even unkillable creatures are killable with cave-ins.
