You need to build floors over all the glowing pits out of adamantine, seal those demons in Hell so that they will never escape! Also, I agree with putting your trade depot down there. That way you can actually send those elves go to Hell.

Wait, better idea, build an execution chamber that dumps the occupant(s) into Hell.

Wall off all but one section of "Wild" hell, so you can drop prisoners in. of course, there's the risk of letting the demons escape by accident, but you survived the first wave, and this is dwarf fortress, I'm sure you'll get over it if you experience fun. hook a fake depot up over the wild area and release the support, dropping the pointy eared bastards and their seven hundred pages of cloth where it belongs.

So, did you set the demon types to none in worldgen or what?

If dwarves decided to live in trees like hippies, they'd still do it better than the elves.

Sure, here you go http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3026

Things to watch out for: I have had problems with squirrel demons with toxic blood(!) that dwarves used to drag around, so finally I gave up and forbade all the corpses with any trace of it. That's why there are corpses everywhere in hell and a pump to clean the floor up in the only way known to dwarves, with lots and lots of magma.

By the way, does anyone know how much space caravans need? Do I need to design it like this (seen from the side)

\___
      \___

with three tiles of space for every z-level, or will this do:

\_
   \_

with just one?

I believe caravans need a three tile wide space in at least one plane (x or y) to pass.

IE:
y-plane        x-plane
___             |...|
     \____     |...|
                  RRR
                  |...|

Caravans can descend ramps at 45-degree angles (one space forward per z-level), so long as the ramps are 3 tiles wide.

Also, this is AWESOME. I didn't even think it could be done. Too bad there isn't the option to name your fortress "Clowncamp The Flaming Anus of Armok".

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.

I now know what I should be doing from now on...
Bugger settling the first or second caverns, down to the third and build up my warriors before striking at Hell and building the citadel down there...

All these people telling you to wall off the pits, wall off the edges, construct impenetrable defenses? Don't listen to 'em, kid. Every dwarf in the fortress now eats, drinks, sleeps, works, and gets pregnant in the bowels of hell itself. Cover the floor with repeating wooden spike traps. Every dwarf in the fortress is kitted out in full plate, and trained to legendary in the use of at least one weapon. You'll be protecting yourself with a wall, all right. A wall of blood, steel, and dwarves so muscled, so lithe, so dwarfy that slaying fifty demons in a day is an accomplishment comparable to eating breakfast.

And then you do it all again, with kobolds.

Try harder. That hardly looks like a colony.
I'm not sure what to do, though, so any suggestions are welcome. Move everything down there? Build a city? Or just leave a giant monument?

Royal dining hall.

Tonight, we dine in hell.

Oh Hell yes!

I've never gone down there... do the eerie pits actually do anything interesting? And could you throw things into them from ground level?
