Well I look at the lists but they really only differ by 2-3 people. Some have about ~12 more people but with 300 population that doesn't really effect much. And I don't see any minorities.

And I end up with more money then I can spend with only 1 teamster office. I usually only build 2 construction offices.

If you have more money then you can spend you are also doing it wrong, you should be trying to get the whole Isle populated. Build more of everything and keep going, its a challenge on yourself to have every buildable area covered, don't forget tourists, get a place for them going, and make sure that every single person has a place to call home, upgrade from shacks to apartments and keep going. Never stop expanding and making your place bigger...

Why? If you have super high happiness, a swarm of children getting ready to work, a positive income, and high respect, why would you potentially ruin it by making the place bigger?

Also what is the most effective way of combating pollution?

Why, cause its not a true challenge then, I thought you were a Bay12er, someone who plays DF....

Pollution is the sideaffect of expansion and industrialization, there is no way to decrease it to nothing without closing down all your factories, the dock, garages, removing the roads, let the forest regrow via stopping lumbering work and so on...

Heres another challenge, make a Tourist resort on an Island with NO industry other then Tourism, and is pure green (well as best as it can be) that means no roads, no factories, the dock must be shut down and you can only build non electrical things and such...

You would need at least one or two revenue streams to get the tourism trade running first and pay your workers.

And having no roads is just asking for trouble. Roads don't cause pollution, factories and power plants are the main sources... and simply having larger populations.

Fortunately garbage dumps (in the expansion) will reduce pollution in a set radius and recycling centers can be built on them to further reduce that, and windmills (expansion again iirc) will provide (expensive) green power.

Freeplay is too easy. I get 80+ happiness, both US and USSR to love me, and bribe everyone until they all love me.

Oh man.  You might not have noticed, but there are difficulty sliders.  They exist for a reason...especially the one that controls happiness and political climate.  It's Fun to make people unhappier by nature!

Picked up tropico3 and the expansion a few months back. Quite a nice little game, not sure how i'd have coped without some of the stuff the expansion adds though.

I hate garages. They're bigger than my damn palace. They ought to come in large and small varieties, or just be a chainlink-fenced paved lot with a shed in a corner.

somewhere between me playing the demo and me getting my hands on tropico with the expansion, garages shark a fair amount. Not sure if it was a patch of the expansion that did it though, but they're much better now.

It's the expansion that made them smaller.

I just finished a rather successful game of Tropico 3. Managed to slush about 100k into my own account, island hit about 180 people and we were having exports on the order of 50k or more. Mostly refined oil and smoked beef, though I had just started a jewelry factory as well.
