The Birth of a Universe
« on: August 29, 2010, 04:08:31 pm »

There is a legitimate theory that the universe exists as a program in an extraordinarily powerful computer. It's because of the myriad ways the universe cheats as we move through it. Things don't exist until we sense them, for example.

The point of all this is....

If this theory is true, and the universe is a program on a computer... then perhaps DF is that program. After all, it's slowly building toward being an entire simulated universe, with fully simulated physics.

Weigh in with your thoughts.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

And to anyone who's going to ask the obvious question - don't even bother, it's dwarfs all the way down.

the problem with theories like that is that they go nowhere towards explaining the nature of the world, even if true, it simply leaves an exterior universe(the one in which said computer exists) that has no explanation.

It's just an interpretation of the universe, another race might say it's like an eco-system or something. The universe could be compared to a computer very easily because the functions a computer performs are similar to those that part of existence/the universe/time-space performs to achieve their purposes.
