You do it again, 20 times more. Then again. And again.
Don't forget to lower your expectations periodically.

As horrible as that is, it's true.
Unless you've got some friends to help and strings to pull.
The right connections can get you very far in life.
Cousin of mine ended up loading IMAX cameras and editing for Terrence Malick at 19 because he knew people who knew people.

Before you can get a job, you need a job to put on your resume  ::)

Yeah, that's where begging and cajoling people you know comes in.  Even then it's hard as crap.

I got my job by just applying to every online application I could find.  Eventually, UPS hired me the second time I applied, and the references were completely inconsequential.  They don't even look, just want people to show up.

nice strawman you pull in there. Depending on the size of the town he lives in, 20 places could very well cover the majority of workplaces, or the majority of workplaces that are at a manageable distance. It's a fair sized number of places in itself, too.

Also, don't forget to follow up on your applications.

I applied for a job (movie theater, but hey, I was 17), and a few days later called them up to basically ask if they wanted to hire me.  They said sure, and I showed up.  Turns out they actually lost my application, and they were looking at someone else's application who happened to have the same name as me.  I got the job anyway, because, honestly, showing up is 90% of those jobs.

Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a job. I've gotten really nice jobs from the weirdest people. Like a job at a respectable stockbroking bank from a guy with more piercings than appendages who I met in a metal bar.

Always ask to talk to the manager. If the manager isn't there, ask when they're working, and go back then. It seems obvious, but I think all the jobs I've gotten without being recommended from inside were because I hung out and talked with the manager for 10 minutes when I dropped of my resume.

Also, if there's a job you think you're qualified for and want, like say, a games store or something - go in once a week. Ask if they're hiring yet. Ask if they've hired anyone new. Ask if they're working out. If they know you REALLY want the job, it goes a long way.
