Well $#%&. Satoshi Kon died.
« on: August 29, 2010, 11:36:39 am »

I don't know how many of you are fans, but the highly creative and unconventional anime film maker Satoshi Kon just died last week Tuesday of Pancreatic Cancer (which is kind of odd considering how much he smoked) at the age of 46.  His major works include Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Paranoia Agent.  All really interesting mind screwy stories, though Paprika could have used a little more length to fill out the story.

He was working on another film called Dream Machine at the time, and he left this huge rambling letter which he apparently wrote after he found out he was dying.  The third link has a translation of it.

So... yeah... There goes another great artist at a not very old age.

I hate cancer.

That's like saying "he was hit a bus, which is kind of odd considering he liked skydiving". Smoking doesn't make you immune to all cancer but lung cancer... (and it tends to kill people later than in their forties, though there are always outliers to either side)

Replace odd with ironic, I suppose.

Obviously it doesn't make you immune to other forms of cancer (Where did you get that idea?), but it makes you much more likely to get lung cancer than you otherwise would have been, so it's sadly ironic that it was a different form of cancer that killed him.

Smoking also increases the odds for pancreatic cancer.

Well alright then.

Cancer still blows...  It killed the dog I'd had since I was 1...

Anyone wanna talk about something besides cancer?  Like say, Satoshi Kon?

Was hanging with a bunch of dudes the other night and one of them had Paprika on his computer. We watched it and I was a bit buzzed at the time so I was lost. Wasn't a bad movie though. Sucks he had to die so young.

I don't drink and I still didn't understand Paprika all that well.

The fact that you haven't seen his stuff is sad too.  Track it down and watch it!  Perfect Blue is really creepy, but it's his first so I'd watch it first if you can stand some explicit content.

Millennium Actress is considerably lighter in tone.

Well, fuck.  I've only seen Paprika and Magnetic Rose, but those were sufficient for me to consider Satoshi Kon a genius.  RIP, dude who made anime that doesn't suck.

Bleh, Paranoia Agent was amazing.  I hadn't even realized he'd made it.

Ah, he made Paranoia Agent? That is sad, that was a good anime for someone who is into anime but not a total otaku.

Damnit, I really liked Paranoia Agent. I'll have to see the other stuff, but it's a shame I'll never be seeing any more of it.
