Dreaming in ASCII
« on: August 29, 2010, 12:05:27 am »

After playing DF for a while, I regularly get dreams that are partially, if not completely, in ASCII. One was where I was in an area with mountains close by. I looked up at them, and saw a DF ASCII mountain (top down, and all layers at once. don't ask how).

I know you do it, so tell me about them!

I used to get those sort of dreams way back when I played Moria...

The occasional DF dreams I get are in the style of the game Dungeon Keeper except the wall textures are the ascii symbols.

I've had a few dreams in ASCII, decided it was time to cut down on my DF time...

As well as the dreams I've had endless ASCII landscapes unfurling before my closed eyes whilst trying to get to sleep. I even had a dragon causing some mayhem in there once, after a particularly drawn-out fight with one.

Brains get screen-burn too.

I did dream once that I was in some sort of 2.5D game engine, like DooM or Duke Nukem 3D. But I was doing regular stuff, like crossing the street, shopping for groceries, etc. But instead of walking, I slide really fast on the floor which was definitely a textured plane.

about a week ago, after working on the weapons in the dune mod for a few days, i had one. basically I'd been running dozens of tests in the arena after changing some slight thing in between each one. In the dream i was basically doing that but i soon realised that any progress i made was completely useless due to it being a dream and not actual DF.

after i realised how futile it was i got up, solved the problem and then went back to bed. took a few days break from modding after that though.

It's been a while since I had a DF related dream. I remember my first, unfortunately it's hard to describe but I was definitely within an active fort. It was all in ASCII but still 3D; it was a bit like seeing an impossible shape in person. I mentioned this to a friend and they asked if it was like how Neo sees the code in The Matrix, it was not like that at all. I was just aware of both it in ASCII and my position within it in 3D. I remember seeing the dwarves running past me in a narrow corridor, the sounds of the fort also.

I can't remember dreaming in ASCII, but I did have a dream that was carried out entirely as an IRC conversation once.

I've actually come up with a ton a cool ideas (Mostly aesthetic) for my forts through DF dreams. Usually I have the "5 more minutes...shit it's 6am" syndrome so when I go to bed, I usually dream of DF and come up with some kickass ideas (Like making a sword image on the floor out of wood, iron and gold within my main trading hall).

I had a dream in ASCII a few days ago. I can't remember the content, but it involved a cave covered entirely in blood (or maybe just red rock) and several demons.

Me too, I was going to a regular place and was disemboweled by a pinky demon.
