If you think it's something like post count, well, first off I don't think Toady would be so... I don't know, petty? You sound like you believe it's the case and that you're bitter about it. Perhaps you should ask Toady. He can tell you better than I can make guesses, I know that.
I meant more "doesn't bother making an official public announcement regarding a ban of someone who just joined three days ago and has no more than a dozen posts to his name" than "is harsher on newcomers". It makes perfect sense to me that he wouldn't expect anyone to notice or care about the absence of someone who, presumably, no one knows.

The same thing happens with spammers and people who come off as blatant trolls off the bat (where threads tend to be deleted rather than locked (which also means there's really no appropriate place to say "knock this shit off yo")), while more respect seems to be given to people who have been around a while and are known to some extent by the community.

I'm not bitter about it, even if I don't agree with notion of just erasing things and forgetting they ever happened, choosing to have more restraint in the case of people who'd be better known and who have spent a significant amount of time in the community is admirable, yet doesn't go so far as making them untouchable (and isn't coupled with rabid xenophobia against new members, as is so common on the internets).

I do, however, think that permabanning someone off the bat for such a minor offense, rather than a warning/mute, is unnecessarily harsh.

No, Neruz was also partially to blame here. Five strikes and you're out.
Except he hadn't done anything wrong there. By that reasoning it comes out as "the guy you were arguing with was flaming you, which is a mutable offense. For being tangentially related to his offense, being the victim of it and all, it counts as another offense on you, which makes five, which is as of now the magic number of moderator actions one can undergo, so you're permabanned".

More realistically, it could be argued that he just happened to be supporting the wrong side of the debate, albeit in a calm and rational manner, which would make it a politically motivated ban, which is just as bad, if not worse.

The stand I've seen from Toady on something like this is, if someone is flaming you, walk the fuck away, man, and report him. Neruz flamed back. He was already on the warning list. Bam, case closed.

I haven't had a single warning on here or anywhere and I post controversial stuff all the time. If there's a religion thread, I'll be there. I get controversial threads I start deleted or locked, but no warnings. Just handle yourself in a polite manner and things should be fine.

I don't think troll brains are any different from others. It's just that they react to people they don't like in such a manner. Some people will hang out with other people and whine about things they don't like, like politics or religion or Twilight. Others will go out and directly criticize them. Some write sarcastic comments, blogs, stand up comedy against those things. Trolls are just people who enter a community, infiltrate them, pull them in with sarcastic attempts to prove their point, then pull the trigger at the right time. They expose the thing that they hate when the most amount of people are watching.

In this case, the guy found a section of people he didn't like - violence and gore and murder lovers. He then found something that appealed to them and did a bit of research into it. He pulled them in with the idea, and snapped it at the right time.

Personally, I did think that it was a little embarrassing to get to the point. Fine, a good game deserves 5 pages of discussion. But this is WTF... around 70 pages? Of a game that has no evidence whatsoever of existing? It is a bit extreme, IMO. Most sites would label that as vaporware, nod to it, and walk off.

Speaking of vapourware didn't a guy say "Wouldn't it suck if the game turned into vapourware?" at the begining of that thread?

There was significant evidence of it existing.  He fabricated two videos for it.  Both of which purported to show early gameplay.

I usually get along pretty well with dudes I meet on the internet but sometimes I just find it fun to mess with people. My trolling attemts are usually pretty harmless and I make friends through trolling quite often. I'm a bad troll. I'm too nice to folks.

Megaman 2.5D was a hoax/lie and it was made entirely in flash/video or something,I don't think it'd be that hard to do something like this.

*shrug*  I don't think the moderation is as strict as it's being painted here. Normally people are warned (oft more than once) before mutes follow. So getting banned is a matter of repeatedly ignoring warnings&getting muted. It probably depends on the time frame, too.

If he was doing it for research, why label himself a troll?  He could've just said he was testing the market or something *shrug*.

Nah, I think it's just about right. I'm a fan of strict moderation. From what I've seen, a forum's only as bad as its worst member. There are forums that try to be perfectly fair to everyone and they end up pretty horrible because the mods are so busy trying to be neutral that they avoid interacting with their members.

The B12 forums are meant to be more of a place to discuss a specific person's games anyway, not a community site. I'm perfectly fine with Toady banning troublemakers quickly if it means that dev time would be shortened by a few days.

Yeah, it's not that hard to make a mockup via flash.

He wasn't though.  He said that as part of his prank, but then later admitted it was just a prank when everyone pointed out how poorly done his research would actually have been had this been a real study.

So because it's possible for someone with way too much time on their hands to fake a gameplay trailer doesn't count as evidence of something's existence before we know it's fake?

Strict moderation just leads to a pocket totalitarian dictatorship where anyone with a different opinion or values than the majority is outcast by the authority.  It's no longer a discussion forum at that point.  Just a board for posting whatever the acceptable types of messages happen to be.
