Melvin! NOOOOO!

It was the armor, I think. You guys slowed down a lot, allowing Vox to get in multiple hits before you could react.

That sounds promising :-*. Although I guess that's what Armor User is for?

Dang, when making my purchases, I was all: "Oh no, Ravus Maniacus will get oneshotted as soon as Vox stabs him, looks like I had better give him as much steel armor as possible."

And you know what? Not only did the armor encumber Ravus to the point that he could barely move, but Vox oneshotted him anyway with a stab to the ribcage, because chainmail does jackshit against kinetic energy.

I questioned the usefulness of breastplates before this. Now, less so.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Both of the knife users in this tourney (Vox and Spanner) seem to have a nasty tendency to hit with disabling attacks to the hands and arms, so even a breastplate might not have helped that much.

Damn. Ah, well. I put up a damn good fight, especially since I was a pierced Antwoman. The bleed put deadly fast. But still, badass way to die.

Semi-Finals
Match One

Maple Willow Aspen (Dwarf Hippy) and Gutstabberson, son of Gutstabber (Minotaur) versus Great Sword (Human) and The Pointy End (Elf)
Managers Mysteriousbluepuppet, Howells, LAAT501Legion, and Arthur Wilborn

"Here we are, Olon! It's the first match of the Bay12 DF Gladiator Challenge Semi-Finals! Look at that crowd! We've got dwarves, humans, goblins, and even the occasional walrus!"
"Well, they'll certainly get their money's worth, Urist. Today we're going to see the human Great Sword, who is veritably covered in armor, and his partner The Pointy End, who has gone through this tournament so far with only his silver bow and arrows. Great Sword appears to be relying on his sword skill as well, having stuck with the Iron Long Sword that won this team their elimination match.
"And entering the ring now are their opponents, Maple Willow Aspen and Gutstabberson, son of Gutstabber! Neither of this dominating pair have decided to wear armor; Maple Willow Aspen's sole concession to defense is a thick oaken shield, while Gutstabberson appears to be relying on the naturally thick hide all Minotaurs have!"
"We've seen that platinum scourge of Maple Willow Aspen's put to devastating use in the previous match, Urist, knocking the minotaur The Smith unconscious with a blow to the shoulder. On the other hand, the Pointy End's own bow skills should prove quite the challenge, especially for the unarmored Gutstabberson!
"We'll see, Olon. This one could come right down to a coin toss!"

The Pointy End begins the match by sending a silver shaft flying towards Maple Willow Aspen, who catches the arrow handily on his Oak shield and shrugs off the impact. Unperturbed, the elf nocks another arrow and pulls the bowstring taut. Meanwhile, Great Sword and Gutstabberson have closed the distance and begin to exchange blows! The weapon skill of both combatants shows here, as each parries the others' strike easily while making an attack of their own.

The Pointy End's second arrow is stopped by Maple Willow Aspen's shield again. Great Sword manages to land a stab to Gutstabberson's guts, and the Minotaur heaves. Enraged, Gutstabberson drives the full length of his bronze pike at Great Sword. The attack is blocked, but the impact knocks the human on his back. Maple Willow Aspen blocks another of the Pointy End's arrows as Gutstabberson begins to spew vomit all over the floor. Disgusting.

Great Sword manages to get to his feet just as Gutstabberson pukes again, but Maple Willow Aspen has finally closed the distance between him and the Pointy End. Up close, all of the elf's archery skill is useless, as the Dwarf Hippy brings his scourge crashing down on the Pointy End's arm, breaking it easily and causing him to drop his arrows.

With a heavy blow, Gutstabberson knocks Great Sword off his feet again, this time sending the human tumbling head over heels and stunning him quite handily. Maple Willow Aspen takes up the slack and lashes the Pointy end twice: once in the chest, nearly caving in his ribs, and once more in the hand, breaking his finger. Gutstabberson attempts to give a bellow of triumph, but is interrupted by another influx of puking. The Dwarf Hippy displays his expertise of the Yuktobanian Whip Dance once more - he breaks the Pointy End's arm entirely with one stroke and dashes the elf's brains in with another.

Puking furiously, Gutstabberson charges Great Sword and knocks him over again, exposing him to the whirling dervish that is Maple Willow Aspen. The two begin to rain blows down on the prone human, breaking bones and tearing muscles. One of the Dwarf Hippy's attacks lays open an artery in Great Sword's neck, spelling the beginning of the end.

The match ends in a spray of arterial blood and minotaur vomit.

Winner: Maple Willow Aspen and Gutstabberson, Son of Gutstabber

"Amazing! It looks like this match was won once again by outstanding team work, Olon!"
"It is a tag team tournament, Urist."
"That's right! Will we see the same kind of teamwork from Spanner and Mr. Stabs, as they face the notoriously efficient Vox and the Spartan? Tune in next time, folks!"

Spoiler: Combat Log (click to show/hide)

Next match: Spanner and Mr. Stabs versus Vox and The Spartan
