Difference between 40d and 0.31.xx?
« on: August 28, 2010, 03:02:06 am »

So I always see people reference 40d and 0.31.xx, and it's obvious that they're different. I've done some searching around and can't seem to figure out what it really is. What I've managed to find is that it seems to be version 0.28.181.40d. Why do people always reference it (almost) as if it were a separate game? Possibly a stupid question, but with all of the different versions out, I can't figure out why people reference that one so often

The 0.31.xx versions of the game came after a year and a half between releases.  The version before that was the 40d release.  The new version added all kinds of stuff, such as healthcare, burrows, and the new military interface.  I'd list everything that was added, but that would take quite some time.  Some people have stuck with 40d because they want some of the more annoying bugs sorted out in the new version.

Ohhh, ok. It was the latest very stable release and after that the new features were tentatively debugged. I see, makes sense now.

And in an effort to curb useless thread population, I'll condense my stupid questions to this thread

1) When dwarves die of old age, are they just randomly struck down? I've seen several of my dwarves die in their rooms randomly. No enemies in the area, just.... struck down. I have no idea how they died (is there a way to check?) and unless dwarven assassins are implemented, the only thing I can think of is that. They were only about 60. Not sure

2) Is there a way to just... make the game not pause? Every time a Kobold pops up, I don't want it pausing. Migrants are cool, but pausing to tell me is annoying. Basically what I'd love to do is just.... leave the game running and see how long until everyone dies. Sounds stupid, but yeah, it's DF. I was thinking about making an autohotkey script to just spam space, escape, etc but that kinda kills the fun.

3) I've read that character traits can affect a dwarf (read "trader") not doing things they should (read "trading") when they're supposed to. Well, at first I thought I was just unlucky and he was just doing his thing. Well, I did some testing. Set all of my dorvz to dumping, and about halfway through I told him to trade. He went on break. Then went to sleep. Then drank. Then ate. Then, apparently tired from such strenuous activities, went back to sleep again. "Ok, cool." I thought, and as I do with all of my traders that do so, I flooded his bedroom with magma. That's good and great and all, but I'm running out of dwarves because of it, and I killed the process and reran the scenario WITHOUT asking him to trade. He completed the dumping and then stood around for a while. It was obvious he was intentionally doing it. So my question is: Is there something I'm doing to cause it? I even gave one trader a giant engraved room, with a high quality bed and every piece of furniture imaginable, and made of gold. Not entirely sure how he could get much happier.

4) Am I missing something with putting stuff in stockpiles? For example: I have a carpenter's shop. I have a stockpile for furniture directly adjacent to it. I also have a stockpile of useless dwarves, apparently full. The shop is cluttered while only a few objects are in the stockpile. Enough for me to know that they know to put stuff there. I'll see 1-2 doors there at the beginning of a fort, and other things.... but dwarves just.... stop using it. With other objects, like bars, I can usually dump the items and then reclaim them to wake them up, but they still just sort of ignore half of the items. With furniture, that doesn't even work. Am I doing something wrong?

1. I've never seen a dwarf die of old age, but if they do, it should say [Dwarf] died of old age. They may have been poisoned or something (if they've been near a forgotten beast), or they might have been hit at some point and had their lungs pulverised. Organ injuries and blood loss cause delayed deaths.

2. Go into the announcements file, and there are options to change that. data\init\announcements.txt.

3. No, traders just have a really shitty work ethic. The solution is to disable ALL of their labours, whether that be year-round, or only when caravans arrive.

4. The only way that should be happening is if your dwarves don't have enough time to move the stuff around. You're using a default furniture stockpile? Is the carpenter making bins and barrels? If so, dwarves may be claiming them for use before it's hauled to the stockpile ("oh thank god, finally, a barrel! let's encrust it with sapphires RIGHT AWAY").

Carpenter makes beds/barrels. I make bins out of copper usually. Not sure if they're being claimed, but it's doubtful. I literally have dozens of beds and 50-60 barrels in there. I don't have any brew tasks set when new barrels are made. Not sure how to check if they've been claimed, but I'll see 1-2 barrels in the furniture stockpile when I first make it. Also, I have basically all of my dwarves standing around doing nothing and none of them will touch it. They have no problem dumping them, but when I reclaim them after the dump, they still won't move them to a stockpile

I think I could kiss you. I can even disable the "ZOMG DA STONE R WARM HAY I STOPT DIGGENG" spam. I will remain sane for a little longer, thanks to you.

Oh! And this makes mass dwarf slaying much more efficient.

To be honest, the magma warning is one I probably WOULD leave enabled. xD

Check your standing (o)rders - you might have accidentally set your dwarves to ignore furniture (or any other number of things).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

"The file announcements.txt (at Dwarf Fortress/data/init/announcements.txt) can be used to control which announcements  do or don't cause the game to recenter and/or pause. For example, you can make the game pause and recenter when ores and economic stones are uncovered, but not when ordinary stone like microcline is uncovered."

Thought for sure that was it when you said it. Nope :( Even tried toggling it. They seem to have no issues with hauling gold from 20 levels down immediately as I create a stockpile... but move a bed 5 feet? No way

1)Make sure the stockpile isn't full
2)Make sure it's the right kind of stockpile
3)Make sure the type of item isn't forbidden from the stockpile
4)Look at the item, make sure it isn't marked "task"
5)Make sure the item isn't designated for dumping
6)Make sure the item isn't designated as "forbidden", and that dwarves have access to it. For example, if you put the workshop as "forbidden", then you can't touch the items inside it I suspect. Check the designation menu for item reclaming option.

Hopefully some of these will help.

Have you customized the settings on your furniture stockpile? that can stop it from accepting anything.

Is it possible your stockpile is full of hidden rocks from when you dug  it out? click d-b-H and select the area over the whole stockpile to show everything there.

If a rock is on a stockpile space, even if its not a rock stockpile, it will take the space.

That was it! Thank you! Didn't know they took the spot. They don't in the other stockpiles
