Why didn't you people tell me sooner? Dead State
« on: August 26, 2010, 05:10:56 pm »

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/25/a-blood-red-state-dead-state-revealed/

So this is a game that is happening. From several members of the Troika/Obsidian crew, including several members of the Age of Decadence team. It sounds awesome and well, read on yourself but basically: Traditionalish ZRPG in the Zombie Apocalypse, with an emphasis on survival and protecting your home base - similar a little to a less horrible Fort Zombie almost. Some have described it as X-com meets classic Fallout and other RPGs, in a Romero zombpocalypse.

D:

I want this. The Troika/Obsidian connection alone is enough to make me want this. And it looks like it's nicely complex, without the hack-n-slash dynamic most Zombeh games rely on.

Oh wow.  This is looking like another one of my dream games.

Replayability...dunno.  But it should be AWESOME for a few runs.

I wonder how much voice acting there will be.

Hard to say if any. The game team seems to only be about a dozen people at this point. There does seem to be some replayability in the lack of an overarching story and the unique way factions interact.

Also dear god just noticed this screenshot and died laughing

BISON BURGERS, YES.

I so want this game, it's definitely spot-on of the ideals I've been looking for in an apocalyptic survival:

How different people react to the apocalypse.

So buying this.

So...A bunch of ex-Obsidian employees (Obsidian being a company formed by ex-Black Isle employees) and a bunch of ex-Troika employees (Troika having been a company formed by ex-Black Isle employees) working together to create a zombie apocalypse CRPG with Arcanum/Fallout-like gameplay.

HELL YEAH.

I'm interested. Hopefully this doesn't go the way of both Black Isle and Troika, and die the minute they hit release.

I was really excited, and I'll probably play it, but I don't like the turn-based thing.  It's not my cuppatea.

Mmm, Bison with the M Bison outfit was pretty awesome though.

Thanks for the thread as I'd not heard of this game, before now. The game sounds like it'll be a blast, and I hope that it scratches the itches that Fort Zombie failed utterly to reach. I'm gettin' a bit tired of zombies being the 'in' thing, but maybe it's because so much of what is put out to capitalize on the craze is mediocre at best. Tired genre or not, I'm now looking forward to giving this game a spin.

At least from Brian's comments it sounds like Zombies in this are more a means to the survival and human interaction mechanics, rather than the core focus of the game like say, Left 4 Dead or Fort Zombie. If this works out it'll really be the first game to EARN it's zombies, as this was why the Zombie film genre started - to motivate the human condition into distinctive situations and seeing how they work out.

I'd love to try World War Z tactics like making lots of noise on top of a large building to make zombies on another tall building fall to their doom

Oh this looks awesome as long as they don't try and throw some crappy linear storyline on top of it.
