Am I in Dwarfstrailia?
« on: September 19, 2007, 11:06:00 am »

Something I have noticed is that nearly all of the maps I generate are in the southern hemisphere, that is, desert near the top, Arctic at the bottom. I don't mind it, but I also noticed that most of the world map I have seen from others' computers are northern. The funny thing is, I have had several different copies of DF on this computer, so perhaps it's just my machine. Anyone else notice an Aussie bias when generating new worlds?

Hmm... nope... nope... nope.

I've got three worlds generated at the moment, and all of them are arctic at the top.

Could be that you actually are seeing the entire world but that the universe works differently than our own.

I've had both northern-hemisphere and southern-hemisphere worlds, and neither of them seem too rare to me.

Come to think of it most of my maps (4/6) have poles at the bottom, but I've not thought much of it till now.

Most of my maps are the same way, with deserts on the top and arctic on the bottom. I thought it was normal, I guess, because I don't normally look at other people's world maps, just their fortresses.

Another problem is that the "world" seems to be a square.  Do you know of any square worlds?  XD

Seriously, I think that it is only played on a part of the "known" world.  DF has a lot of realism, but I hope Toady doesn't make too much realism, a 3D globe would just be a mess of a world.

If my memory tells true then climate/temperature is a fractal map just like elevation and humidity, cold can be to the east, west or even middle of the map, methinks.

Anytime I've paid attention, the cold was at the bottom. I just assumed that was how the worldgen was setup. Never really thought about it after the first time. The world map on the screenshots page is the same way.

Most of my maps are in the southern hemisphere - I really thought it was a nice touch, how it can be northern or southern.  Toady sure thinks of quite a lot of details, doesn't he?

It's very useful to only map out a part of the world!  Off the map, anything could be happening.  Armies from nowhere!  Whole civilizations to repopulate the world once your insane adventurer kills every other sentient being!

In fact, who says we might not all be playing on the same planet?  A very, very big one.  Ring shaped maybe.  Watch it when you flood the world.

I knew it, DF is actually an MMO. Sweet!

I hope at some point we can have whole desert worlds, or ice worlds. Ooh, or maybe the whole world will go through ice-ages over time, with appropriate evolution of the creatures. And evil-ages. Wooly zombie mammoths.

Now that's an interesting idea...  a DF MMO.

I suppose if you really wanted your world to be in the northern hemisphere, there's an easy fix for it...  When you save your map after the world generates, just flip it 180*.   :D

Actually, the DF "world" is actually 1/8 of a planet. It's 1/2 as tall * 1/4 as wide = 1/8.
