As I have always said, NWN 1 is still going strong and has way more active players than NWN 2. But it is all about the persistent worlds, DM tools and campaigns being run.

You can still find fun one-off games and campaigns to join here: http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/

Think of it as a way to play D&D online with a DM and storytelling and all that. I myself have run a few games over the years, one was even set in the d20 Modern setting using some mods. A friend of mine and myself co-DM'd a fun campaign set in Calimshan that spanned about 15 sessions before the conclusion of the story. It worked really well for both of us to possess the NPCs and breathe life into the world. One of us could be setting up or modifying areas we already setup ahead of the players as the plot shifted while the other DM would be throwing encounters at them or RP with the NPCs. we had an average of 5 players throughout the sessions, good times.

I am interested in this new game, ONLY if they allow us to run our own games like that, with full DM tools for storytelling and actiony awesomeness. Otherwise I wont even look twice.

If you've got NWN2 and could tolerate the combat, then Mask of the Betrayer is worth getting. Not so conventional storyline and setting, some meaningful choices and decent writing.

Now, concerning this thing. It's being developed by Cryptic Studios. All they've ever done were mumorpegers. Might just be me, but I do not think that bodes well.

Hm, I guess I'm one of the few who was engrossed with the NWN2 story and played it start to finish. The silver sword that you assembled from the shards was badass, and I loved the different ways you could overcome most of the challenges. I finished the game with a half elf favored soul who had a big floppy hat with a feather in it, and a rapier that could crit on a 15. Good times.

Yeah that sword wouldn't have been that bad, if there actually would have been a weapon proficiency for it.
What?

Combat oriented classes had an option to become a "Mace Expert" or a "Longsword Master".
But the developers decided to make that silver sword a weapon, which didn't fall in any category.
Oh, I never actually used the sword in combat. I just made it swirl around me to hurt people or shot the shards at people while I used my sweet rapier.

No. I never particularly liked NWN2, and I don't think the first would have been much better. Now they're watering that down too.

I actually really liked the DM-tool aspect of NWN 1 (the campaign was meh...).  It was fairly simple to use and could be easily modded.  I really wish someone would do a remake of this software and release it as is, without all of the effort spent on a crappy campaign.  The only problem I had with NWN1 was the fact that it was difficult to keep your game modded correctly to work with different host games.  You were constantly searching the NWN mod forums for required patches and content paks that you needed.

Think of how awesome it would be to be able to build campaigns, instantly create and submit custom art, start games from a lobby and do this all from a single application, connected persistently to an online network.  Patches and fan-creations could be dispersed instantly to your machine.  There would never be a need to log-out and search forums for content, download it and extract all the crap to your machine.  Everything would be instantaneous, and everybody's game version would always be up-to-date and ready to play.

So let's say for instance that you needed a Horned Demon.  You could immediately type in "demon" in your creature asset box and immediately you would see 30 Horned Demons of all shapes and sizes to pick from, designed directly from the community.  There would be no need to go and prepare your campaign content before-hand, it would all be right there ready to go.  Now, that would be awesome.

The problem with NWN was the fact that it needed multi-player to become a lot better, and the story was lackluster. The problem with NWN2 was it's first act... GAH, the god damned first act. Where nothing happens... at all. Just problems that stop you from finding out what the magical macguffins do. Act 2 was better, and act 3 was like act 1, but a quarter the size. Or a tenth. The story was better than NWN1, but it really ended stupidly until Mask of the betrayer retconned it. The expansions for the original NWN is supposed to be good.

Anyway, I'm not a big fan of MMOs, so I'm not going to bother with this.

the great thing about NWN 1 is that it is STILL the only game out there that allows DMs to run players through their own creations, with robust tools to control the world and create a living experience for players that AI and scripted events will never accomplish.

I do wish someone would make a game that does this, and focus just on this. Completely ignore a single player experience and release it packaged with tons of DM resources and a few ready made campaign settings.EPIC WIN

I'm pretty sure the first vampire: the masquerade game let DMs do that too. But yeah, its wierd that game developers just abandoned that concept entirely.

Generic, boring, and completely uninspired sounds like the NWN franchise, so I imagine it's right up Cryptic's alley. :D

Only thing that made the first two games decent was the modding capabilities.

Liked the first one "ok." Only really found it interesting after people made some persistent world servers.

NWN2 was more of the same, except somehow even less cooler. Plus I was playing DA at the time, and NWN2 had nothing over it except the 3.5 system, which I loathe.

So I'm not really looking forward to NWN3.

I was actually really fond of Aribeth, partly because of her blinding plot-induced stupidity and because of this exchange (probably from TvTropes).

"Bastila is basically an expy of Aribeth."
"Bastila has several things Aribeth doesn't. A grasp of strategy, basic tactics, and the concept of an indoor voice."

Man she was loud for a half-elf.

They definatly seem to be distancing this from the term "MMO." I'm curious to see how that'll be reflected in the pricing. Trying to charge a subscription for something that isn't an MMO will be a hard pill for most people to swallow.

Hopefully this isn't just marketing speak, and they actually are trying to learn from their mistakes.
