Try and distract him with conversation, just long enough to try and get a 'grip' on his axe. We may not be able to wield it like a sword but we should still be able to grab it and get it away from him. Failing that make a link with as many blades behind and beside him as possible. When the time comes, either bring them all, tip first, to his throat or just stab him through from as many directions as possible at once.

"There's a price on your head! What more reason do you need?" you say, heart and mind both set on attacking. You draw two swords and cast them out to your side, spinning them around you -- a rotating wall of death. You draw a third and prepare to send it straight for his head, when he says something peculiar.
"As I thought. You're a telekinetic too."
His words force you to hesitate.
"Why attack me and my men? For money? Surely there are easier jobs. Why would you help them!? The merchants are our enemy, the enemy of the people!" he declares, his voice unwavering.

You do wonder what he's going on about, but you need that bounty money to enter the decapathon. You focus behind him, levitating the bandit's weapons, pointing their tips at his back. He doesn't seem to notice, his attention focused squarely on your spinning shield of death. You send your third sword and the conglomeration of bandit weaponry sailing through the air, ready to pierce through and lacerate and slice and cut and kill!

"I'm sorry, Simon. I don't care what you're rambling on about. Your time is up!"

They surge forth and you smile, awaiting the warm splash of blood that is inevitable.

It never comes. Instead, the sound of shearing metal and buckling steel echoes through your ears, a sound so loud and crushing it makes your head pound. You feel the blades being crushed by some unknown force, crumpled into spheres. You push them at Simon harder, but he continues to resist. You tire quickly, lose focus, and the spherical compressions of steel explode the moment you release your grasp on them sending shards of shrapnel in every direction. Your shield barely manages to defend the brunt of the attack -- some razor sharp pieces slip through, slicing your arms and legs.

The pain throws you off-balance and you stagger -- Simon knocks away your defensive wall easily with the blunt side of his axe, then delivers a solid blow to the side of your head. You 'see' the world pulsate, feel the warm trickle of blood leaking from your head, your eyelids fall shut and you collapse onto the grass, losing consciousness.

Utter darkness, a sea of black, you drift through it, empty. Is this your mind? There's a light, not far away... you float toward it, hesitant at first. You feel reassured. It's the only way out...

Flashes of red. What? You haven't seen colour in years. Red again. Oh, blood. Of course. You open your eyes. You lie in a field next to a fire. The smell of burning flesh surrounds you. You focus. A pile of bodies to your right, emanating heat. Someone's burning them. You feel light pain in your arms and legs and you check them over for wounds -- they've been bandaged. What are you doing? Simon Leishman. You need to finish him.


Status: Soaked again, coated in mud. And blind. Have a 'thing for swords'. Bandaged?
Abilities: Telekinetic. Can lift small objects and also swords. Swordsmage. Can hear the whispers of the blades and maybe cast some magic. You think you've forgotten most of the magic you learned, though. Can 'feel' the surroundings (this replaces vision and is unaffected by darkness.)
Inventory: You don't know where your swords are. You think one might have exploded.

You have one ability point to distribute.
Telekinetic Level 2 lets you bend steel and break bones, twist limbs, etc. With your mind. -> Level 3 would be ripping limbs and people apart.
Swordsmage Level 2 lets you summon a couple semi-ethereal swords from nothing. -> Level 3 would be pulling forth hundreds.
'Sight' Level 2 upgrades it to a passive ability, always active and not at all taxing. You're always aware of what's going on. -> Level 3 would be identical to sight but superior in every way. Color, smell, sound -- all could be 'felt' from a distance.
Alternatively, you could put it toward a new ability.

Sight, And I would have sided with Simon, 'cause hey, I like fighting for the people in things and he could've killed us at any moment. And my guess was right.

And a better description would probably be it's passive and you can 'see' in all directions at once. Can only ever concentrate on one direction, but all directions (including above and below) are like your periphery.

Look for your swords without moving or opening your eyes any more.

You continue to lie on your back, still. You hear a rhythmic pounding, the sound of someone struggling. Then you hear chopping. What is it? Sounds like steel cleaving through flesh and bone. You stay still, focused, only to find that you're aware of what's going on around you, your perception drastically improved. Why? Better not to question such things. It's almost like you can see.

Right. Swords. That's your first order of business. You search around, finding several in a pile. Most are crushed or bent, their tips broken off. What about your swords? You continue searching, but to your surprise find two of them lying next to you. The third's location still eludes you -- you can't even feel the slight tug of its tether. Now that you have a weapon, your attention changes to Simon. What's he doing?

He was the one responsible for the cleaving of flesh and the cutting of bone -- it's as if he's dismembering the bodies of his comrades and then...? A nauseating smell floods your nostrils and you hear the familiar sound of a crackling fire. Of course. He's burning them. 'Of course'? Why would you think that? What kind of bandit leader burns his followers? Is he trying to destroy evidence? That's ridiculous, he's probably wanted in half of the cities of this country.

The struggling earlier, what was it? Oh. Looks like he's piling the bodies on top of each other before chopping them up, to get the job done faster. Again, it seems like needless effort. He might have a reason, but whatever it is, you can't figure it out. Just from watching Simon, you wouldn't be able to tell that he's a telekinetic. He's doing the hacking and slashing with his own two hands. You wonder why. Your telekinetic powers are your greatest advantage over normal humans -- without them, you're little more than a blind girl who likes swords.

Half an hour later, he's done. The fires are still raging, the blood still covers the ground, soaking into the soil, but for the most part, the camp's been cleaned up. Might be a little harder to get the splatter out of the wood. Simon sits down on a bench, none the worse for wear. He stares up at the sky -- is it nighttime already? How long were you out?

With a sigh, he stands and walks over to you.
"I know you've been awake. How're my bandages holding up? It's been a while since I've left anyone alive."
His gruff voice is completely without compassion. You're fairly sure he's planning on using you for something.
"I don't buy your story about the bounty. You don't seem like the kind of girl who'd murder for pocket change."
It was hardly pocket change, you think, but remain silent. Besides, it's not murder if you're murdering a murderer.

"What brought you to this town? Don't tell me you were one of the pathetic fellows suckered in by the Decapathon. That disgusting event is sponsored by the merchants and backed by the city council. They're rounding up the undesirables -- petty thieves, beggars -- collecting them and caging them. Then they give them knives and dump them into the arena, and anyone with a sack of gold can have a go, see how long they can last against a horde of 100 ruffians."
Wait, beggars and petty thieves? You're fairly sure the pamphlet said that only the most violent of criminals were forced to partake in the event.
"It attracted a lot more attention than either group thought it would. Hundreds of adventurers surging into the town, buying weapons and armor. And if they happen to perish in the event? Their equipment's forfeit, sold back to the merchants who sell it to the adventurers who fight and die, the cycle repeats. The bourgeoisie's rolling in gold now. They ran out of violent criminals a few months ago and tried shipping some in from other cities. Too expensive, of course... so they started using citizens and villagers."
What's he still rambling on about? This exposition's really annoying you.

"They shifted the Decapathon from a weekly event to a monthly one, in the off weeks the town's almost completely empty," he says, nearly finished.
"But like I said, you don't seem like the kind of girl who'd kill a hundred innocents for a nice house and more gold than you could ever use. What brings you here?"
