"The Blender"
« on: August 22, 2010, 08:21:45 pm »

Would just like to say, that constructing a 3x3 wall of Weapon Traps, each with 10 Iron Saw Blades in each of them, is the best way to stop a goblin siege.

I watched 20 Goblins walk in, 12 disappeared in the first 3 seconds, the other 8 ran instantly. I haven't had any other problems from Goblins since. Only issue is there is QUITE the mess to clean up.

You need some drawbridges, or water traps to force them to path through the traps until they're all dead.

Goblin #16: Where did the leader go and what's that red mist?
Goblin #17: Run away!
Goblin #16: But the way in is closed behind us, maybe the boss found a way out.
Goblin #18: Leeeeeeeeeeeeroy *splat*

In my experiences my traps are perfect until I try to add water, then things go terribly wrong.

It almost reminds me of the water pressure trap I was trying to build that'd push a foe into a saw bladed weapon trap and dump their remains in a butcher shop at the end, cleaning up all the blood on the way in the water through grates at the end. Ripe for butchering.

Stick with bridges then. I like to use a meat grinder, which is basically a long passageway hidden under the entire entrance and covered by bridges one z-level up. It's weapon traps all the way, and walled in at the sides.

So all I have to do is pull a lever and some long bridges disappear and all that goblinite has no hope of escape.

Goblinite!

WILL IT BLEND?!

One of my forts I had the "Killinator" or some such other made up word (curses to me for forgetting the name)- a 20x3 gauntlet of sawblade weapon traps. Repelled countless sieges and made a gorgeous mess of things....

Your killinator needs a roof.

Your killinator needs a roof.

Yep yep. One of my many unfortunate oversights. ><;

Now though.... now its time for Killinator Mk II - now with roofs!

Ha mine accidentally has a roof! I win!

Mine is actually the Entrance Hall to my fortress, its a 3x20+ hallway with little pairs of 2 extrudes for statues, inbetween all statues are sets of weapon traps, then between the other spaces are "Airlocks" big 3x1 floodgates I can close to seal off my fort. Still working on forging more Iron Blades for more sawblade traps! I figure what the best situation is against a siege is that I close the innermost gate, then close the invaders between it and the outermost, leaving them to run between them stuck in waves of traps.

I hate it when bits get stuck in fortifications. that's the worst.

Yea the mess is unbearable.. my dwarves never get around to cleaning it either even with a proper dump zone and claiming the stuff properly. The worst part is that there are little skeletal arm looking things everywhere now (using K does not show what they are, I'm using Mayday's Tileset)

You're sad that the bones of your enemies are scattered around your fortress?

It uglies up my entrance, I mean I'm dark dwarves but 20 sets of goblin bones through saw blades is just ugly.. that and my dorfs don't seem to want to get the clothes that are in the traps either lol

Remodel the entrance so that it is all magma-safe then do a regular flood of magma once a season. Cleans it all out nicely.

Err.. one issue, last time I tried to pump stack magma there was a horrific accident, not going to be doing that again anything soon. My hands hurt enough from setting up the first 20 deep pump stack.

So cheat a little and use dfhack to spawn some magma directly in your holding tanks then recycle it.
