In that case, doesn't Angband have a multiplayer variant.

Exactly! It sucks. At least for me. I played another real-time roguelike that I don't remember it's name. The game was great but it was kinda weird playing real-time with ASCII.

Roguedjack is a really interesting developer to me, he seems to be developing in a real bubble. I'm not sure if he's into other roguelikes, or if he knows/cares if people play his game and he's just putting it out there.

Rogue Survivor is in the top tier of roguelikes imo and should be more known and respected and I'm not sure why it isn't. It's so rad!

I really think the AI is the only thing with the level of retarded luck to evolve from a ZM into a zombie prince. Day 4, I'm just chilling in my safehouse/grocery store, no weapons in hand. I felt safe, spraying scent killer as I went in and out so no zombies followed me. But I forgot about spraying myself one time when I left. A day previous, 2 ZMs with a biker gang's worth of zombies stormed my base and made me spend all my rifle and pistol ammo fighting them off. I had found a shotgun and more bullets for everything, along with some medical supplies and pills. Then I heard bashing. Naturally, I run to the back of the store and grab my shotgun and a couple boxes of ammo, thinking it would be just a stray shambler or two hat followed the trail.

Naturally, I was wrong. A zombie master bashed down the shelf and started shambling towards me. This didn't alarm me much, I would just wait at the door for more zombies to follow its trail then get a face full of buckshot. Then a zombie prince follows right behind it, likely moaning out the words "ding dong, motherfucker!" Cue me running to the back of the store, pushing shelves in the way then grabbing more boxes of shotgun shells. I wait for them to bash the shelf down and start unloading. I get cornered quickly, so I push some shelves in their way and then run through my shelf wall.

I run outside and get surrounded by shamblers and fresh zombies, dozens of them. I laid out Roguedjack's zombie, then ran for it. The map edge to the south of my base had a flaming car blocking one tile with a corpse and deactivated bear trap in the other. I activated the trap, dropped it, then blew away a shambler when he got stuck on it. Repeat this process until the zombie master comes up. I kite him to death as I shoot him, easy enough. Then the zombie prince comes, and I have no shells left. Cue Benny Hill run around my base before I spray scent killer and run back into the store and block the door. Now I'm at the present, still waiting for that zombie prince to come in and eat me, shotgun in hand + 10 shells, almost fully loaded rifle slung over my shoulder (no extra rounds) and a pistol in my waistband with 20 extra rounds.

Yeah. While I love the game it basically feels like there's a countdown timer to "get bent over by the AI."

If it's not unstoppable, never ending zombie packs finally locating you....

It's the biker gangs that all roll up on you as a group. If it's not them...

A pack of survivors breaks down your barricade, takes your food and lets the zombies in. And if that doesn't happen...

They just mob you for your food.

It's a survival game and so I don't sweat it too much. But there are times I want to get farther than AI will seem to let you.

And playing as a zombie can be really, really painful trying to evolve. Either other zombies are way more effective at taking down a survivor than you are, and effectively kill steal from you....or the military drops in and pumps your guts full of lead.

I've managed to evolve to a zombie prince once. Really, the odds are stacked against you as a ZM trying to evolve. Almost every undead is faster than you, which is the hardest thing to deal with. Your defence, attack, damage and health might be higher or equal to any other zombie's as a ZM, but without the speed to stop the deadly chain of kites the civilians pull on you then you might as well be dead. To make it worse, you need a lot of kills, whereas a fresh zombie needs 2 to become a neophyte, which makes them the same speed as a human, and 4 or 6 to become a disciple which makes them faster than a walking human. Then they start hogging kills. Really, a thinking mind that uses any form of tactics can't pull it off, only by stupid luck and bumrushing tactics can the AI do it.

Not true. I like the method of standing in the doorway of a one exit building and waiting for the survivors either fall asleep or desperately try to fight their way out. They rarely win. Free kills.

That works, but with the rot system now it might be a little harder since you can't afford to stand there for days like you could before. Then you have the risk of cops, national guards, gangsters or spoilers spotting you and gunning you down like a firing squad.

EDIT:
I was being chased by at least 15 zombies. I ran for my life naturally, and found a civilian by the name of Patrick Forrester being chewed on by a zombie master. I pop it with my army rifle and me, with 1 HP left, pass Patrick my fully loaded shotgun + 7 shells. I stuck with him for a bit as a few zombies slowly trickled in, and us blowing them away together. Then a big group came. A zombie master with 5 or so shamblers and 2-3 Agent zombies. Him and I lined up behind some cars and started to fire with all we had, I was a bit further back since he had to be close to make his shotgun useful. We gunned all of them down, except 2 shamblers, when we ran out of ammo. We started to run down the map edge, he was punching out a dark-eyed shambler while being chased by a normal shambler as I cleared the skeletons ahead with my baseball bat. Despite his critical condition at 3 HP, he continues to shout insults and punch the shamblers, seemingly ignorant to his death awaiting him. As we neared the exit, I saw the perfect roadblock. A car was blocking one tile, while another car was slightly misplaced. I gave the car a hard push and put it into position. All Patrick needed to do was get over the car and we'd be safe, which he did, but then his bloodlust got the best of him... He yelled another insult and charged once more. The dark-eyed shambler, having enough of getting his teeth punched out, latched onto Patrick and ripped a bit of him off, finally killing him. Feeling empowered by the kill he just made, the shambler warped and twisted until a dark aura surrounded it. In my critical condition, I didn't want to risk going in and recovering his corpse. Rest in peace, Patrick, my hero and savior.

I died shortly after. With night falling, exhaustion creeping on me and no possible place to stay without being eaten in my sleep, I ran to a different district hoping for salvation. Instead I get a massive army waiting for me, then get surrounded by skeletons who did no damage thanks to my army body armor. Then a red skeleton shows up and claws straight through my armor and kills me. I resurrect as my zombie self, with 5 ranks in Z-Strong, strangely enough.

Yes... Yes he was...

Dunno if I'd say that. PZ is way more focused on simulating survival, RS has a lot more gamey stuff going on.

I always wonder what happened to the author of Rogue Survivor, he disappeared a few years ago suddenly from the surface of the internet while he was working on a sequel.

I hope he's alive and well and he just had enough of those game coding stuff.

Yeah, the game kind of had a fanbase (even a Steam group) and he just vanished without even saying anything. Man, I miss this game so much, I wish he at least made it open source before disappearing.

Funnily enough I was just thinking about this gem last night! Still love playing this game though I'm sad development had just dropped out of the blue. It was one of my daily update checks back when! Would love to see spmeone take up the style he had with this game.
