Yeah, you know what I mean  ;)

Thanks for the tileset link but I'll man up and go with vanilla. It's all good, a day later I'm past it.

I recently brought up a random conclusion as to the order of what you eat food in.
1. Groceries
2. Expired food
3. Army Rations
4. Expired Food
5. Canned Food

Explanation:
You eat groceries first because they expire in about 2 days, the shortrest of all foods. They provide the highest nutritional value of the three foods.
You eat expired food as second because it becomes less useful, and nearly useless when it spoils. This allows you to keep some of that nutritional value before it expires.
You eat rations third because they expire in about 5-6 days, the middle ground between groceries and canned food. They provide nutrition between groceries and canned food.
You eat expired food fourth because it is nigh useless, but eat it in safety because you may vomit, which lowers your stamina a bunch, leaving you without stamina to climb things or run.
You eat canned food last because it never expires, ever. It provides the lowest nutritional value, at about 258 NP per can. They can stack, though.

Mild rage post.

I don't feel like there's adequate control in RS. I love brutally difficult games but I'm starting to feel like this one rapes for no apparent reason sometimes. I'll meticulously make a nice safe room, a follower or two with okay skills to guard it pepped up on a never ending supply of blue pills. Hauled beds inside for an occasional health top up. Spend ages stockpiling weapons and ammo, nicely sorted on the ground for easy access. The entrance is barricaded like a mofo complete with a littering of car wrecks. Then a prince of darkness or something similar busts in and kills eeveryone :'0 I also try to use the scent masker but it doesn't appear to do crap.

End rage.

Begin tips, hopefully.

You need to use scent masker going in and leaving. It lasts for one hour a use and has to be used to be effective. Also, only go out in the rain.

My problem is that there is no way to build movable barricades that block sight. Its quite annoying trying to build switchbacks to prevent other survivors from seeing my food.

Yeah I was a bit keen when I first begun and read the whole manual so I've picked that up. I pretty much always spray coming and going. Saving trips only for the rain is worth remembering though. Just depends on my stockpiles.

Lol, other survivors. I've trialled this method on and off but I'm starting to think the best way to go about surviving is to kill any civilians you don't need. If the party's full up and they don't look like a fight or better yet don't have a ranged weapon, I shoot to kill :P Saves the zombies evolving somewhat and leaves more supplies for my guys. Oh, and I think it'll stop them perving on your food.

Back to the scent masker, I've only quickly played as a zombie and it was pretty cool to see how it works. When I spray, for that hour how does it visually affect the trail I leave behind? Is it just on one square or a small radius? How does the zombie AI follow this trail as well? A bit of extra insight into how scents work could be very helpful.

Read his changelog. He changed up how he did scent trails in the alpha 6, so if your still on 5 you might want to give it a shot. I'm not sure of the exact mechanics though.

From what I discovered in Alpha 5.....

Every turn you lay down a scent where you are standing, unless you use a scent killer, which stops you from laying scents for 1 hr. These scents linger for varying times, but will last probably half a day to a day in dry weather.

Different zombies can smell at different ranges. Skellies can only smell on the tile their standing on, making tracking near impossible for them. Zombies can 2 tiles out, and zombie master can see 4 tiles out. Zombie masters also leave a "ZM" smell in the same way humans do. Zombies will take priority to follow these scents.

So, if you are happily sleeping in your barricaded room, a zombie master may smell you, even though you didn't leave, because you are leaving a scent it can smell on the tile you're sleeping on. So, the game mechanics are more inclined against "forts", probably for good reason too....the game would be too easy.

Yeah, I am glad that the game is inclined against forts myself. Every great zombie movie is about zombies finding and killing everybody inside a fort

Detection range is good to know.

So they can actually smell you through a wall? I'm not sure I like that :0

This is not the case in alpha 6.

in A6, zombies that can smell can only smell the tile they are on and all adjacent tiles. their smelling ability is a % of how well they smell scents. most importantly, this stops zombies from having "xray smell" which they did in previous versions.

They can only smell nearby tiles as Mechanoid said. They could smell through walls before, so it was not smell but a radar before. Now it makes sense.

Now it's possible to make fortified bases, before that... Well, on my settings (280%+) it was impossible, you had to move around (and it was impossible to have followers since they gave up your position). Behemoths would smash walls and find you anywhere because of that x-ray "smell".

I'd say Zombie Princes. They can push, climb, had the highest smell range in A5, have 120 hitpoints and always have a small army following them.

Smashing down walls is just an expression that means they can get in very easily.

Behemoths also refer to the mod Deon made where the Zombie Princes got replaced with said Behemoths. They look exactly like a tank from L4D, for reference.

unsolicited ranting

In this current game I'm on my tenth day which is a tie with my record, new to the game so go easy, lol. I'm starting to refine my technique and regularly avoid most zombie raep. Just when I think I've got things under control something new comes along.

I hear the tell-tale smashing of furniture. My little door block of shelving is being beaten in. It gives way.. I wait a moment. No zombie rush. I walk out a tile and oh look, it's the national guard. They proceed to waltz on in and make themselves at home. Na it's cool guys.. help yourselves to the rations..

Not quite the helpful dudes I thought they were. On the plus side, I'm temporarily invincible if the hordes come knocking.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: Three hours in, new record set at twenty days aand.. dead. Ah, so epic. Top game.
