I just beat somebody's face in over some medikits, but I didn't bother to loot their safehouse. I may be a murderer, but I'm not a looter.

...That came out wrong...

Yes, apparently you need the .net framework for it.

Have you tried the readme.txt solutions :
Quote
> PROBLEM : GAME DOESN'T START OR CRASHES EARLY!
If the game doesn't start or crash when you start a new game try the following steps one by one.

1. Run Rogue Survivor configuration program (RSConfig.exe).
Try different combinations of Video and Sound options, Save&Exit and start the game at each try.
"Managed DirectX" as Video or Sound is likely be the source of the crash.
Try "GDI+" for Video and/or "SFML" for Sound.

If changing setup config failed, you might need to update some system files.
Restart your computer after each install.

1. Update your DirectX installation.
Download "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" from Microsoft here:
   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

2. Update your .NET Framework.
Download "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5" from Microsoft there:
   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&displaylang=en

3. Update your .NET Framakework part 2.
Download "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1" from Microsoft
   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en

4. Update your graphics card drivers.

Note that the RSConfig.exe is missing from the alpha 6 release, but is available separately (the "hotfix") in the download page :

I feel like a fucking idiot.

I wish we could unload weapons.

You won't believe how many half loaded shotguns I find in the CHAR offices ::)

Apparently I found a soldier named Pvt. Lewis Lewis.

I just starved to death in a basement because someone put shelf on top of the stairs in the ground floor. Reincarnated as a random NPC and took my store of army rations on the ground floor and went downstairs and killed my zombie :)

Hmm.. so I've been noticing that in these newer versions, making a safe house almost seems impossible. I used to just barricade 3/4 doors in a small home/room, get a bed inside, a cabinet and some large fortifications (to hide my stash in a corner), and then go about the rest of the house lightly barricading here and there to make a single route to my front door.

But now civilians will just bust down fully barricaded doors and wander on through. Haven't seen them push my stash cabinet away yet, but the broken barricades are a big problem. If I'm out scavenging and I come back before midnight to a broken safe room, I'm screwed. Not to mention that's another day of gathering wood.
I've tried to remedy this problem by pushing beds and cabinets against the outer side of my barricaded doors, but they just hop up on them and break in anyway. I guess large objects might solve that, but it's not exactly easy pushing 9 fridges into one building all while staying safe.

Any tips? I like having a safe house, I'm not one who's always on the move and always making temporary shelters. I'm also a pack rat which calls for some kind of home base. Do I just need to deal with it and alter my play style?

Beat down the barricade on a sewer maintenance, beat down the door itself then drag a car on top of the manhole. Climb down, barricade the door in the sewer or barricade the door on the surface, use the other to leave your safehouse. The car stops most zombies from wandering in and the part that you're in the sewer makes civilian AI less likely to wander in.

I haven't gotten around to playing the new release but it sounds much more annoying to create a safehouse.  Normal civilians are starting to sound more and more like zombie masters, heheh.

Yeah, honestly I think there needs to be some work done on balancing the powers of other survivors. They can kill you pretty quick and randomly. I think it's a great addition, just needs a little fine tuning.

Other survivors (including you) follow the same rules that applies to all living: They can take low amounts of punishment, but can shovel it out in loads to others.

I finally caved in and weathered the nasty visuals.

I burned through a couple of games lasting a few days each. Then I had my first long, excellent game. This time I survived ten days. Ah, fun times. It all went downhill the night I didn't keep an eye on my fatigue and fell asleep in the street, haha. Woke up to a thorough raping and immediately ran back to base. Just my luck, I then found my four followers er.. dead.. and had to shotgun them to the face. They just couldn't hack it solo, without their glorious leader. Sad times. I was then unceremoniously taken out by two random walk-ins.

A great game!

Right, but in a game world sometimes a bit of tweaking can make for a better gaming experience.

I remember that you used to be able to survive indefinately by sleeping on the stairs as a National Guard or any other NPC that doesn't eat.

Nasty visuals?  They aren't the best but I thought RJ increased the image quality for all sprites in one of the recent releases.

I know Deon has created the Genesis Mod for Rogue Survivor if you're interested in a much better looking tileset.
