Bicycling.
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:38:55 pm »

Noticed there wasn't a thread here about cycling...

So, who here enjoys cycling? And what kinda bikes do you go for? Do you do stunt/mountain/track/time trial biking?

Myself I love biking. Such a great way to get around a city quickly, I have a mountain bike. While not the most efficient way to travel, its certainly the coolest bike of them all.

This is my bike, slightly different colour. Cost me about £300 quid due to a deal from my dad work.

Edit: also, I do have foot straps on mine, and the suspension at the front works quite well

Yes, as much as it is a shock to some...

But bears live outside.

Okay more seriously, I do enjoy cycling though I don't own my own.

I bike inside. Just around and around the couch...

I cycle when i go outside. It really was a far better option than just sitting around when it was really hot.
I also like to use it for going to school. I tend to walk slowly and it takes half an hour by foot.

And lol, hamster wheel.

I usually use my bike when travelling about, mainly because I can't drive a car worth a crap. And it's fun.

My bike is a... I'm not sure what "kind" of bike it is. It's not a racing bike, I'm not sure if it's a mountain bike. It's just... a bike. I always keep it in the highest gear since switching gears can sometimes cause the chain to jam, and at any other gear, it just feels like too much work to get any speed(plus, the extra effort to accelarate is good excercise).

How heavy is it? Is the top tube (the horizontal one running from the seatpost to the handlebars) straight horizontal or slanty? Are the handlebars flat, curly, or what? Are the tires fat or skinny, smooth or knobby?

Anyway, I love biking, it's like the best form of transportation and of exercise. I've really only been into road biking but I'd like to start mountain biking too.

I bike occasionally when I'm at home. My college has a ton of hills, so I'm not really sure if I want to bring my bike here. It would certainly be good exercise. At least, better than I get most of the time.

When I was working as a janitor (I'm sorry, custodian team member) at the mall a couple of years ago, I used to bike to work. Can't do that now, I work a couple of cities away. But I was taking my life into my hands everytime I rode out.

Damnable bears. I lost a broom to one of those once.

Also my bike is a cheap piece of shit.

EDIT:

Good job on my location and currency, website.

I think, because being on a bike FEELS more vulnerable, that people assume it's dangerous. Really, I think speeding down a freeway at 70 mph is more dangerous by far...think about the relative consequences of crashing that car, versus your 15 mph bike swerving off road and throwing you over the handlebars. Both can be deadly potentially, but one is far more likely to.

I think the illusion of safety created by being in a metal cage ("cage" is biker lingo for cars btw) probably accounts for quite a few deaths (of drivers, passengers AND people outside the car) due to inattention or lack of preparedness. On the other hand, the sense of vulnerability on a bike probably discourages a lot of people from adopting it as a mode of transport when there are tons of benefits to that, both personal (your commute gets you in shape and is enjoyable instead of being a boring period of time that you have to endure and are inactive - just to name the first things that come to mind) and communal (reduced pollution, reduced congestion, less wear and tear on roadways means less cost in taxes to maintain them, again just to name the absolute first to pop into my head)

This is true, in countries with responsible traffic laws. Mine doesn't even have bike lanes. I used to stick with the carpenters (who also typically had to bike to work, because it's cheaper than commuting) so that we were safe from

a) cars, which were more likely to slow down upon seeing a mass of people
b) bears.
