Fortification help
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:01:46 pm »

i built some fortifications in my water trap to keep the building breakers out of my flood gates but for some reason the goblins and w/e washed right through my fortifications as soon as i flooded the place.

are they supposed to do that cause the wiki says they kept out creatures so im just wondering.

From what I read about the subject, it seems that water will "push" creatures through fortifications, providing there's a significant water flow involved(e.g. you flood a chamber).
They seem to prevent regular, not "water assisted" movement though.

Yes, because pressure only moves horizontally.  Vertical pressure merely teleports the water around.

k thx and one last thing, are floor bars destructible? as in destroyable by things with the building destroyer tab.

the wiki mentions that wall grates were, but isnt clear about floor grates and floor bars

i do beleive projectiles only go through fortifications if you are right next to it.

Building destroyers seem to be unable to destroy floor grates that are above them (as long as there isn't a ramp or stair right underneath it).  Though I don't think it has been fully tested, behavior certainly seems to point that way.

Also fortifications are supposed to have a high chance of blocking projectiles fired through them if the shooter isn't directly adjacent.  However I think that may be bugged.  I've been seeing goblin squad leaders firing at my guys through fortifications with no hindrance in the least.

Use a diagonal path to remove flow? Something like this perhaps...

Code: [Select]
XWW...
WFW...
WW....

X - Floodgate
F - Fortification
W - Natural wall
. - Empty space

@meowmix highly unlikely.  Wall grates in my experience suffer from the same problem as fortifications. kcwong's design might work pretty good though.

But I have been lead to believe that fortifications may not be blocking pathing at all to water based creatures, as long as the fortification is in 7 deep water, with or without flow.

Though so far this is only a theory.  I have recently had a waterbreating trader, head towards an underwater, fortification-ed route into the fortress.  From what I can tell, there is no other reason why he went the direction he did, and it certainly wasn't flow pushing him, because he split off from the rest of the traders (that werent aquatic) and went that direction when still on land.

Unfortunately he found his way into the meeting hall waterfall intake instead and didn't live to tell the tale.  But I can't think of any reason why he would take that route unless he was fully intending to pass through that fortification.  Unless of course, he was fully intending to commit suicide via meeting hall waterfall of course.

in short, needs more testing and I'm too lazy to test it.

I think I read somewhere that a downward stairway with no upward stairway connected to it will serve as an indestructible floor grate without allowing anything to travel through it.  If not, I'm almost positive that a downward stair with a fortification built under it would be ample for the purpose.

As for shooting through fortifications, the way it worked in 40d (and still does, I imagine) is that there's a probability of a projectile being blocked that goes up considerably with distance from the structure.  It's a test against the shooter's skill, so a hyper-elite bowman could snipe your archers through the slits.  There are stories of modded orc marksmen wiping out defenders this way.
