War Animals
« on: August 22, 2010, 01:40:44 am »

So we all know that mankind used animals in all sort of things, of course war is among them. We all know of the great Chargers of the kings in medvial times, horses that dont know fear (anymore) and will trample you to death with ease or Hannibals War Elefants with them he even crossed the alps and so on.

But what only a few may know, even in the second worldwar were was one particular animal. Private Wojtek, the bear. Yes Private, he was actually enlisted to the polish army. He was not really a fighter, he still helped out hauling artillery ammo, thats still freaking awesome.

I guess some of you already heard of him, but i think thats still worth sharing for the ones dont know about that.

Design to attack Japan. However, we had trouble testing them. They ended up in random barns across the US.

Wotjek was awesome. Also the Chargers weren't just rained to trample, they were trained to kick and bite. No one want to be bitten by a horse; it is painful.

sure i do, i just didnt wanted to stress that line to much :p

and about the other two: the bats are just another atempt of the batshit insane americans, like project nuke the moon or other stupidis

and the pidgeon i dont see much special about it, it was a homing pidgeon with urgent messange, it just did what they always do. flying home with some letter on their leg, this specific one was used by military with important messages, but still not really exciting, at least not compared to a artillery ammo carrying bear :p

In WW2 the uk had some rather odd plns about pidgeons that would fly explosives into targets and rats with bombs on for assassination...

the soviets win thoough for having anti tank dogs.

http://www.soviet-empire.com/1/military/anti-tank/dog_mine/index.php

they trained them by placing food under tanks, as you can see in the picture linked on that page (t-34, with fake gun for some reason). the idea was when let loose on the battlefield, they would run towards the german tanks, get underneath, where the long trigger device on thier back would be activated, blowing the tank apart from its softer underbelly. however, they actually ran towards the soviet tanks, as they were familiar with thier shape and they werent shooting at them or trying to run them over.... doh.

didnt the US military try and train dolphins to plant explosives? i kind of remember the story - they were set free to try and mine some ships in the cold war and they just buggered off back to the wild.

Dolphins who can plant explosives? Dude, they're already rapists and serial killers, why would we want to arm them?

Dolphins: the only mammals I hate more than Chimpanzees.

Animals in war time...

Unsinkable Sam, was the ships cat on the Bismarck, After the British sank her, killing 2,095 of her crew, Sam was found sitting on a plank floating in the ocean... The crew of the destroyer, HMS Cossack, picked him up, named him Oscar and headed for home...
Six months later the Cossack was sunk, by a Uboat... Sam survived, unlike 159 of the crew... He was transfered to another destroyer, HMS Legion, but did not stay abord long... He was transfered to an air craftcarrier, HMS Ark Royal, which was destroyed by another Uboat. Sam was found sitting on a floating plank, "angry  but quite unharmed" and picked up by either HMS Lighting or HMS Legion (agian).

After this Sam stayed for a time with the Governor of Gibralta. Then moved to Belfast, where he died 10 years after the war ended, and about 13 years after the Ark Royal sank...

Now some may say, that was one lucky cat surviving all that, And some may say he was an unlucky cat, getting stuck on so many sinking ships.
I, however, wonder... was he a spy for the Germans?

Just think about it this way: an unkillable cat in DF, at least it was not a female one......

I modded in the ability to have War Walruses in my DF game.

Haven't had any luck actually catching one of the buggers, yet...

(I'm not sure that has any historical relevance, however)

I actually modded in various Australian animals as war animals. Nothing funnier than an ascii Koala mauling an enemy goblin.

I'm pretty sure the US trained dolphins to scout for or defuse naval mines (I assume defuse means asplode) and at least considered using them to deliver explosives and do other stuff.
