Breeding Dragons?
« on: August 20, 2010, 09:38:24 pm »

So a dragon on hte outskirts of my fortress area.
It was time to pack up shop, the fortress has a large above ground area, where serveral major industries (bonecrafting, butchering, leatherworking, soap making, masonry, carpentry...), all militiary (including there accomodation), 20+% oc civilian accomodation and multiple recrrational areas.
It was a sealed mountain, only one way up, unless you can fly. and that way was blockable by lowerign a drawbridge to cover all ramps (i didn't bother to drop it).
So, I set my civs and squads to seige mode, now one leaving the mountain. and began the final rites.
Artifacts placed, large engravings, dining rooms full of platinum thrones...
I saw it coming up the mountain, for some reason it was going the long way round, to enter via my normal path, (the walkable path)
My archers valiently fired a couple of volleys,
and then suddenly it was gone.
Instead of flying up, it walking up, into may cage traps.
So now i have a caged dragon, with "a dented underside"

How would I go about breeding it, if i get a second one of right gender.
Wait, dragons are megabeast, and thus don't breed.
Damn.
For purposed of this discussion, lets assume they can. Via normal sporing process.

So what would we need?
A deep pit, drop the dragon in, then quickly have a dwarf jam a grate on top of it?

Or maybe i could install the dragon, once tamed by a dungeon master, on to a rope, in a alternate entrace, opened only when we are undersiege.
It would still spore.

If they could breed, they would breed through cages, and their offspring would spawn instantly in the mother's cage.

I thought cages prevent the spreading of spores.

Have the DM tame it and your problems go away, they're no harder to manage than tame bears.  I haven't had a pet dragon (or a DM, for that matter) since 40d, so my intel may be out of date, but I found dragons to be fabulously ineffective watchdogs.  They didn't last long against goblins, and even with infantry support, they sustained debilitating injuries and never recovered.  I always wound up butchering them and selling their steaks to elves for wood.

Dragons may have recieved a buff, since 40d.
I've only played around with them in  the test arena, (I may have been operating it wrong)
but 20 odd dwarves in full addy, with all combat skills maxed out, didn't stand a chance.
... I might have maxed at the dragons skills too maybe.

I miught have failed at operating the test arena.

seeing as dragons don't have the [CAN_LEARN] tag, what happened was not to surprising. you may have accidentally given the dragon addy armour too.

Not only are DMs bugged to be unappointable, their noble position doesn't actually allow the taming of exotics.

Dragons should already have gender tags, which are required for breeding. They only need a [CHILD:number] tag if I recall correctly.

If I recall correctly, spores spread even if there is no way that they should be able to. Wall him in somewhere.

Dwarfy Solution: Build a pit in your entranceway with a bridge over it. The bottom of the pit is another bridge, and below that is the dragons lair. When enemies come, open the first bridge underneath them, then close the first bridge to ensure that the Dragon does not escape. Then, simply open bridge 2.

Bonus points if this involves some sort of labyrinth that forces the goblins over the pit repeatedly.

Double bonus points if you rig the labyrinth to flood in order to push all the goblins to bridge 1.

Oxinabox, you seem to be operating under the assumption that dragons can fly.  They can't.  An uncovered pit should be fine after you mod in breeding for dragons, as long as you keep people away from it so they don't get cooked.  Also, if the dragon hasn't killed anyone yet, you can tame it (with the Dungeon Master, though, so you might want to remove the [PET_EXOTIC] tag and replace it with [PET]).

This fortress is turning into some kind of supervillain lair or something.

They can't get pregnant, but if they're caged while pregnant they will give birth in there. At least, that's the only explanation I can possibly come up with for the occasional in-cage birth I see.

If I recall correctly, there is a bad habit of talking out our collective asses here on the forums.

Now would you kindly move along?

Yes, I specifically did not state that animals in cages cannot give birth. Trust me, I thought up above sentence. :D

Uh... dragons don't fly yet. So yeah, it's not much of a wonder he wound up in a cage.

And if you want to breed your dragon, won't you need a dragon of the opposite sex?
