The engraved were a trap. They wanted our more powerful forces to go north. Sadly, I don't think we're in such good condition to deal with the last guy. Still, our Seraph "buddy" is probably needed at the pillar. If we could find a way to end this battle fast...

Azel: Anyway, unless I'm obviously way off, I still say we tell Seraph that the appearance of the pillar means the current battle's a distraction, and that he needs to get his ass to the real event. He might abandon us... or he might not. Wait, can Seraphs heal?

Rowan: Run away from the pillar of doom until help arrives. Make sure your S.H.I.E.L.D. friends do the same. If things get too rough, head northwest, toward Seraph.

See if you can draw out his soul or better yet, make him repent his sins, then use your Preserve skill on him.

AzeL:
Ayup, seraph owes us a soul, but going for this demon's soul right away would be too obvious. Feint an attempt on its soul then counter whatever attack it throws at us. Once it is injured we can go after the soul in Earnest.

RowaN:
Whatever is coming up next is going to be a problem so we need to prepare. We need to get rid of as many ravens as we can on our way under cover and get an update on how the other fronts are doing. But the most important weapon that we have is our faith, we need to say something inspiring to our allies and stay visible. We weren't given these weapons fso that we could hide...

I rushed out at him, ducking left when he lashed out to the right with a roar. Fire spewed from his mouth as he brought around a great iron flail, black as soot and just as gritty. The head was spiked, with burning coals embedded in the tips, and the chain was human bone. It slammed into the ground behind me with a thump, tossing me head-over-wing. I took the momentum and rolled to a stop, beyond his reach. He lumbered forward, hoping to catch me with my pants down. I was ready and cut him just above the ankle as he rushed by. He growled, belching smoke.

Devils of his caliber were huge, up to twelve feet. This one was only ten foot tall, but he was still head and shoulders above me. He lowered his horned head and spoke to me, molten rock dripping from his jaws.

"SILLY ANGEL. WHY MUST YOU FIGHT? YOU SEE THERE, THE BLIGHT PILLAR IS TOUCHING GROUND. NONE WILL SURVIVE." He belched more smoke, a plume of ash spraying into the air like a beacon. "YOU WILL DIE NOW. WE HAVE OUR OWN DEPOSTLES NOW!"

What the hell was a Depostle? I didn't have time to think, because the flail shook the ground next to me. I leapt up as the demon tried to pry it from the ground, his red eyes growing wide as he realized he was doomed...

I got back to the walls before the Blight hit me. Most of my teammates were not so lucky, however, and rotted alive while they were eviscerated by Raven packs. Soon the Vile purple light died down, and we could all see the Devil that had come before us.

It had a human head, with a tiny mustache and a crew cut. It had a demented, confident smile, leering at us from almost a mile away. I could feel the Corruption from here, and it's wings were like crimson baseball fields. This thing was evil in it's most pure form, or at least approaching it.

"Evening, Ladies and Gentlemen!" It cried in german. Several soldiers jumped in recognition. We had all heard that voice, albiet cracked and twisted by old video...

"So I am hearing you think to fight ze armies of hell? Vell, I vish I could vish you luck, but I happen to have zer intrests in mind, so I think I vill simply..." He pondered for a moment. "Have a look around, I think. Of course, you all have to die for zis to pass, but is a small price to pay for freedom from my own Chambers!" He laughed, and I could feel the blight ripple in waves out from Hitler's mouth.

"Oh yes! I guess I should tell you now; I am a Depostle! Zees Ravens? Destractions. Zee Engraved? Ve had hoped they vould vin, but I vasn't surprised ven zey didn't! You see, I vas hoping for zis. It's payback time." And suddenly, he was there, among us. The blight burned, and his sword flashed, cutting a swathe through our ranks. I tried to rally, but the presence of a Devil, and a historical one at that, broke our morale and we scattered, running for our lives.

Then, from the north, something exploded and distracted everyone.

  "HEY HITLER! GO TO HELL."

Is it worth going for 5 will for the Solomon thingy?

Anyway,

Azel: Eat demon's soul, then rush with the Seraph that's mad at you toward the pillar.

Rowan: Try to find somewhere to hide. Useless character is useless, especially against a depostle. Let the mysterious ally fight off Hitler with Azel and the probably-going-to-die-soon Seraph.

Yeah I've actually had that planned since you got to S.H.E.I.L.D HQ. I mean, Hitler is, if not numero uno, definitely in the top 5 most Evil Fucks ever to taint the ground they walked on, not to mention really good at leading people to do his Evil Overlord shit, so why not have Satan have him as a general?

I admit I totally made the Depostle stuff up on the fly though.

I struck him first in the head, when he wasn't expecting it, he growled and took the hit, slashing across with a massive axe the size of my wings. I rolled mid-flight and ducked under a massive arm as he swung,
but though I hacked at his armpit, iron-tough skin deflected the holy steel and he came away without a scratch. He clashed his arm shut, clipping my wing and brining me down.

The Devil leaned over me, studying me. I could see his repugnant face looming over me, grinning widely. As he raised the axe high over his head for the death blow, a shadow came upon his shoulders. He didn't seem to notice in his exultation of his victory that a silver garrote slipped around his neck. His laugh was cut off when it dug into his neck.

Devil's don't need to breathe, but they get used to it, and he reached back to tear his attacker off. I took advantage, driving my blade in his ribs, directly into his heart. A demon needed a heart, even if his lungs were useless.

Unfortunately, he looked down at me and smiled the same demented, psychopathic smile he smiled back when he was still human.

Hitler tore the woman off his back and tossed her down beside me, then twisted his axe to get both of us in one swoop. I shoved her to the side. I had the feeling she was more important than me, and in so shoving I may have been able to save myself.

I may have been able to save myself. Probably, actually. It was very likely I would have survived, albiet crippled as the axe came down on my legs. I would have been redeemed, finally. I would have paid my dues, I would be able to watch humanity if it survived or return to heaven if not.

But I never got a chance.

Seraph leapt under the falling axeblade, sword held high. Undoubtedly he thought to bring down the demon himself. He always seemed to want to do everything himself, as if no one else was capable of any self-defense at all. And he did stop the blade, just long enough for me and the Girl to get out of the way. Then Hitler grunted and killed the most combat proficient angel in three planes.

He dissolved into golden dust and floated away on the breeze, which was what happened when Angel's "Died". It would take quite some time for him to return, and he would have to be reborn as a human several times to even make it back into Heaven, but he would be back. But only as long as Heaven remained, and with how many powerful holy beings had died, that seemed to be less and less of a possibility.

Someone fired a cannon. I stabbed him again and again. He was shot over and over. Eventually he went down, after hours. There were alot of casualties. But really, the battle was over when Seraph died. Everyone was just in a trance, going through the motions.

We were alone, fully and truely.

Alone.

Well, that was interesting. Demonic hitler, out for payback.

Well, we had best take stock of what options we have. Azel can do that, as well as appraise what our current stronghold is like. Rowan can rally everyone and tell them the reality of the situation, we just beat hitler AGAIN. Serves that bastard right! This is a TRIUMPH!

  The funeral was... wet.

It was raining pretty hard. I guess the Big Man decided to send his regards, though those of us on the ground would have prefered it at least be dry. But there was no arguing, especially after the rest of the Seraphs showed.

Seraph was a general, or more accurately a squad leader, of a trained group of Angels, specifically trained to be the best of the best. Gabriel used to be one, but he traded it in for the more administrative Archangel position. Seraph's men were also called Seraphs, which made it a little confusing for new souls, but Seraph was still the best. The cream of the crop.

Until then. You really can't be the best of the best from inside a pinewood box. He'd dig himself out soon enough, but we needed to make sure the carrion beasts didn't mess with any vital systems in the meantime. A couple years under the dirt would keep him safe until he was reborn into a new, human form.

Didn't make the funeral any happier. Even when he did come back, he'd be pretty useless. Half his memory would be gone, he wouldn't be immortal, he'd be able to be corrupted; all sorts of bad things. Really, he may as well have been dead for good.

After the funeral I took stock of my new fortress. I was now officially the most powerful Devine there, so they really had no choice but to hand command to me. I presented Seraphs blade to his followers, who placed it on his grave and dissolved it into the dirt. Everything was in order. Nothing to do now but wait for someone to come up with a plan.

I went out to stand on the walls. They were rather flimsy steel things, designed to keep out Ravens, not Demons, but they held my weight well enough.

What was the point? If Lucifer could gather enough power in two weeks to wreck the Middle Plane, who was supposed to stop him from taking over Heaven? Me? Laughable. Seraph was dead, so he was out of the question. The only stronghold of good left would be the Plated Palace, and that would be empty and dead, kept clean only by Gods will. He wouldn't have anyone to go take Heaven back, and he was never very willing to leave his home, so... What now?

Someone climbed up behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. It was the girl that had taken me here. She was quickly becoming a bad omen for me.

"Hey." She said, coming to stand beside me. She gazed out into the rain pensively, looking about five years older than she did when we arrived. I could see she had been crying; her eyes were puffy and faint trails of mascara trailed down her face.

  "Yeah." I said.

"So, you know better than I do. Are we losing?"

"Lady, you already lost. And the good guys are struggling. I mean, Earth is a wasteland, a Saint and a Seraph are dead, one was damned,  how I don't know. Do you think we're winning? Hell no, we already lost."

She was silent for a minute. "You know-"

"Spare me your damn speech, woman. I've heard it all before. This isn't going to get better. This is fucking it. The end. End of the book."

She looked me in the eye, hair hanging heavy with rain. Her lips were thin, and her eyebrows creased in anger. "My name is Rowan."

  "Don't care."

"You should. That's the name that's going to save the world someday. One day you'll be telling stories about how you met me, and you're going to regret ever speaking with me like that."

"You sound like a fucking movie."

  "Screw you, asshole."

"Piss off." She snarled and stomped down off the wall. She shoved a Seraph aside as she walked. The kid just looked surprised before glancing at me. I shot him a look daring him to say anything about it.

"What do you want, cherub?" Cherub wasn't probably the best name to call a Seraph, but I was pissed off.

"We have a second task down here."

"Then do it. I don't give a shit."

He cleared his throat. "We are, Azel, our job is to take you directly to the Plated Palace. The Lord wishes to speak with you." I perked up at that. God wasn't a talkative type. "Personally," the seraph added for good measure.

"Yeah, fine, I guess." A sparkling portal opened next to me. The seraph looked a little startled, but I had been to the Plated Palace before. That was under entirely different circumstances, but our entrance was entirely public. The... incident... Had happened inside, in the throne room.

This would be the second time seeing God in the flesh. And frankly, it was frightening. I had no idea if he was in a grudge holding mood, or if he was still in his peace-loving christain phase, or what. I had been out of the loop for years.

Was this a opportunity or a trap?
