Dry ponds & the Wet Season
« on: November 29, 2007, 09:19:00 pm »

So I can't remember the exact biome details something warm, and with elephants.
Everything was peachy until all the ponds dried up before winter and someone died of thirst. At first I thought "That's a mildly frustrating thing that I wish I'd realized before hand." But I got through winter and just as Spring was hitting I got a message that told it me it was now the Wet Season. I thought "That's great. The Ponds should flood again and as soon as I get the underground reservoir done, I'll have water underground (Though, the reservoir is built, I can't build anything over the chasm to carry the water because dwarves are cowards and run away instead of working anywhere near the chasm.... I officially hate batmen. But that's another thing altogether). So I figured at the worst, I'll siphon off a pond or two when they flood again. Then I ran into trouble. The wet season doesn't flood.

Things dry up in the "dry" season. But the "Wet" season is not wet at all. it didn't even rain during the wet season.

This isn't a bug per se.  The ponds aren't designed to refill.

Ponds do refill sometimes, though. One way or another, there's a bug involving the  swamps.

If the ponds aren't designed to refill in the "Wet Season" then

1. There shouldn't be a "wet" season
2. The ponds shouldn't drain in the first place or shouldn't be present in the first place. It's painfully illogical for ponds to start draining because dwarves showed up. Unless dwarves exude dust of dryness.

funniest thing is when you think... yipee.. man made indoor farm with no access from the outside and proceed to dig some more/enlarge it (eg channel from the top, etc)

... then you find out.. no you can't plant squat in the muddied pool or whatever it's called. and it exist on its own.. surrounded by a load of dry land on the same level, never drying up. can't even use it for stockpiles..

Actually, you can convert it to normal terrain. Build floors on it, then dismantle them.

I can't dig through the muddy ground either. I tried designating channels on it, nothing happens.

Ponds not refilling isn't a bug, but a missing feature.

Yeah, I also think it's annoying ponds sometimes simply dry up and don't refill. I mean, it fits the game great that you might have unexpected problems with it  ;), BUT if there were many many ponds when I was choosing the place and they all permanently dry up.. Then maybe the start situation was outside the natural variation of the climate?

Maybe the game could simulate climate for 2 or 3 years when you create a new map?  ;).
