Its been free to play for almost a year now. They've also announced CKIII.

You say announced, it releases on the 1st of September.

Somehow I completely missed that. COVID has changed how time operates for me.

I've finally done what I've been intending to do since Holy Fury was released. I finally formed the Slavic Union.

I kept getting bored and quitting before I finished it, but not this time.

Bulgaria got Child of Destiny'd by an AI and proceeded to devour the ERE. They then split into Anatolia and Bulgaria. Anatolia got eaten by the Abbassid blob. Later Bulgaria got eaten by the Umayyad blob.

The HRE was formed by Lombardy when they invaded Aquitaine. I've lost two crusades for Saxony, lost a great holy war to claim Pomerania (The leader of the Slavic Church got captured) then won one for Germany. Scandinavia's been christianised, nobody settled Iceland so it's still Irish/Catholic. I've just been building up my powerbase, waiting to fully upgrade my demesne before I upgrade to feudal.

So I am now emperor of the HRE.  I've usurped the papal states and formed the Kingdom of Romagna, with some luck I'll be able to change succession laws in that Kingdom to primogeniture before I die.

How exactly does usurping the papal states affect the rest of the game?  For some reason I haven't been excommunicated yet.

Also, empires and kingdoms.... Do I want to destroy kingdom titles as emperor, or create more?

EDIT: haha. My savegame... when loading it, the difficulty level says '0% (pointless)'

Keep hold of kingdom titles. They're useful for reducing overall vassal numbers (Give them away once you're over your limit) and give you more prestige than vassal kings. It pisses off de jure vassals because they want the title, but if you don't form it then eventually one of them's going to get over 50% of the land in the title and form it themselves.

I can create something like 12 kingdoms right now.  I suppose I should only do so when either a vassal is close to forming it, or I have a vassal (/family member) I would like to transfer the title to, to prevent holding too many titles?

I'm pretty sure you have been excommunicated, its just that the letters declaring you such have not been allowed to leave the Vatican.

Nah what happened is, I got excommunicated, and within a few days, my son and heir asked the pope to revoke my excommunication and the pope agreed.  I was behind on reading the messages.
EDIT: I've just been re-excommunicated.  Perhaps my first priority for law changes should be free investiture so I can appoint an anti-pope and vassalize the vatican.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Pope will excommunicate any christian that holds the Vatican other than him.

Just assassinated the newly minted Shia Caliph of Syria and they went from over 30000 troops to 10k as the event troops went poof. Guess we can end this schism early.

New Caliph is some Greek bwoi with a 2 in Martial and his heir to his kingdom isn't even Muslim.
