You can't order him to take the vows?

Nope, can't monkify someone if they're currently heir to something.
Not even if they're imprisoned?

I think imprisoning them works. Not sure though, I haven't imprisoned any unwanted sons for the lulz yet.

Wiki says imprisoning them should work, and ironically suggests excommunicating them to accomplish that?
Also, with free investiture, you could nominate the son as successor to "an old or accident-prone bishop"

Currently playing as Pictland (Skotland (Scotland)) from a Charlemagne start, first time I've seriously played in a long time.  It's great.  Starting as tribal let me mess around with the familiar raiding mechanics, though I wasn't able to raid like an 867 Scandinavian.  It has tactical benefits like softening up a county before declaring formal war, though, and the extra gold was nice.

It's now 806 and I've completely vassalized Pictland, which isn't that impressive considering I started as king.  I did capture the castle of Dun Ber and kick out the count in order to adopt feudalism, and then Tanistry, so I only suffered one gavelkind succession.  The results of that gavelkind (a strong rebellious relative to the north) were actually solved very handily when I adopted feudalism, due to the way it wipes out your levies.  Suddenly the pretender's "faction" (just him) had absurd relative power, so he pressed his demands.  In actuality my levies were growing fast enough that I probably didn't need to hire a mercenary band, but I did anyway.

Of course, now I'm in the somewhat unfamiliar position of being a Christian king surrounded by Christian realms.  I'm forging claims, obviously, and slowly making headway into England that way.  Trying to get just enough to usurp duchies then press those de jure claims.  It's slower than being a pagan but not so bad.

I'm tantalized by the idea of asking the Pope for claims, but it's not working yet.  Probably because I have free investiture to make my nobles happy, which I think adds a strong extra penalty when asking the Pope for favors.  On top of the general opinion modifier which I've mostly overcome with my court chaplains.  I would try to install one of my bishops, but I don't know how to even get them into the college of cardinals.  I don't think it's particularly practical for a fairly poor nation of picts...  Though I guess I could create a vassal theocracy under a virtuous bishop.

And I don't think an antipope can offer claims like the real Pope.  Though I'd love to see the heresy spread across West Francia, hehe.

I'm just a bit worried about the Norsemen coming up around 867, I guess.  I don't think I'll have Britain established in 60 years, but I should be about done with England with luck.

Looks like My Imbicile of a brother dismantled his merchant republic, too bad.

Hopefully, when he dies childless, we would have some more reasonable division of land.

Note that to grant a Mayor a duchy you have to give him control of a county first. They won't convert to feudalism or anything like that, but Baron-tier characters can't be given duchy titles so that's something to be aware of. Also if you have Conclave, then you'll probably get as much gold from your feudal vassals as from your Merchant Republics. The law changes means that everyone will give you gold and troops after all with no hit in opinions, whereas before only the Muslims got to enjoy that. You'll still want a good number of Merchant Republics for the economy bonus from having trade zones set up, but I find that they aren't as critical as they were before. Once you get a large enough realm the gold will just be flowing in massive quantities.

Eh, the norse aren't too much of a problem. The raiding's more of a nuisance and the prepared invasions are few, far between, and often only consist of about 3000 men.
One of my happiest moments in CK2 was when a Norseman assembled a massive host of 30,000 men to invade my little Kingdom. The invaders got lost on their way, got stranded on Iceland and everyone starved to death. When at last my soldiers arrived they found only 200 survivors, killing them all, capturing their leader and extracting a 500 gold ransom with which I constructed a very nice castle town.

Haha, glorious!

@USEC_OFFICER
I don't have Conclave yet, but thanks for the info.  The mechanics sound pretty cool, I'm enjoying some interface changes in the base game which I think are relevant?  Basically the screens for laws are a lot better organized.

Also I literally don't have boats yet, much less trade practices :P  But good point that merchant republics can be useful for more than just extra taxes, when I get to them.

Revoking kingdom so my side-heir would grab it instead of a specific county. That's some interesting choices game makes me make.

Looks like my aspiration to create island of Jews is not as futile as I thought. Even though I suspected council Jews are coded to be infertile.

One day I will conquer Scadinavia for them. Now what do I do with my hypervassal kid who is bethroted to almost post-fertile woman and has a heir in empire I can't beat?

Christ. Fucking nomads seem to be either bugged or like to punish you for being good at the game.

Rebellions, not a problem, just... frustrating that for some reason I have a 128% revolt risk for minor clans being upset about all the land I have, yet no option to actually split my clan (presumably because I'm constantly at war with every minority religion in my Khanate) and I have no desire to give up any land to these little bastard infidels.

I'm trying to regain the titles I lost because my previous character died while his heir was a child, so no Khaganate, but I also can't tell the prick to give up because the rebels control some of my land.

I was making progress, only had one guy to get rid of, and then the check decided to throw up another 2 massive Orthodox and Sunni rebellions.

Thanks.

I decided to give the Saxons another try, after losing that crazy Venice game when the Byzantines DoW'd me.

I am doing surprisingly well. I am on the verge of winning against West Francia's offensive war. I... I feel like I am actually learning! What is this new and strange feeling?

Anyway, I managed to prevent the frankish destruction of Saxony by pretty much attacking anything east of me and betrothing a daughter to the norse king of Danmark. Soon, the anglo-saxons will get the anglo beat out of them.

EDIT: Where is threat located? I just realised I should have quite a bit, but... can't find anything.

You have to open the diplomacy screen on yourself.  Its kind of awkward, really.

You should make them vassals.  For extra lutz, make them Mayors/Lord Mayors/Merchant Republic(s).  And have them educate all your children.

I almost asked the same thing earlier today, actually!  Then happened to find it.

Recently I remembered that heresies are basically free CB forever, so I married a heretic.  Whoops that doesn't work for Christians.  Relocating my capitol to a heretic county does, though.
But actually, screwit.  There's a Cathar province in Britain, my character desperately wants a CB, and I'm playing with mods.  I'm just going to adopt Catharism by console.

I already reloaded because I married someone to change religions and then couldn't change religions.  Because that makes no sense IC.
It is "cheating" of course but I already re-established the Eastern Roman Empire as a Mali trade republic.  And ascended from count to emperor...  Sorry, from Countess to Empress in one lifetime.  I'm only having fun at this point.

Started a vanilla game as Count of Tirol. By the death of the first ruler I had five daughters and no sons. The three counties I had were divided among my oldest three. All three of them were highly skilled, the eldest being a master of intrigue. The timely totally natural death of one sister led to the head of the family regaining control of Kempten, though the other managed to get married and have a son before being kill-uh dying naturally, of course.

During this time Bavaria was going through multiple civil wars. With a unified Francia separated from us only by a fresh-faced, ambitious five county Germany, I decided to rebel against my Bavarian liege and, once independence was gained, swear fealty to the German king. Whom I then immediately kidnapped and executed, forcing a new dynasty onto the throne. With a new, friendlier king I pushed the Germanic borders East, taking most of my old liege's territories through fabricated claims. I now control fully half of Germany's unified territories (we have taken most of Brittany, Aquitaine, and Burgundy from Francia while they deal with empire-crippling rebellions) as a Count, and have given critical aid in a number of our wars.

But man the years where the three sisters were ruling were tense as hell. Everybody was trying to kill everybody. That Spy On option is amazing though.

Very annoying when you forget that one of your prisoners was supposed to die in oubliette when you go on releasing spree. Now once again Wales will be intruding on England because I've got no capital county.
