I don't know how to mod CKII, but I would love an LOTR mod. That would be pretty awesome.

There is one already. I played as Sauron, sent the Mouth to fetch the Ring, got it within a month of the start date and started to lead huge armies of Orcs into Gondor at a simply stupid speed. Stopped because it just wasn't sporting.

Anyway, got my first shot with Conclave today. Turns out using tribal armies to simply roll through all of Scandinavia results in every pagan in a 10 county radius joining a coalition against you. My infamy is 78% and all surviving Finnish pagans have allied with the nearby Slavic and Tengri pagans to try and dissuade me from attacking. Shattered retreats are a little odd, but overall I don't mind them. Haven't really had a chance to see the child education system through from start to finish yet. Sieging and movement feel like they happen faster, but I'm not sure if there's an actual difference or if I'm just seeing things that aren't there.

"Wow I love shattered retreats, they add to the gameplay experience"

Has anybody ever said this?
To play devil's advocate, if you're conquering the world as Ireland you're doing it wrong.
Just saying, mechanics to slow down expansion have some justification...  Expansion was always slow.

As for fun, the game is horribly tedious when you get too large.  So it's honestly ahistorical AND unfun to try to conquer the world ASAP.

That said, shattered retreats are frustrating and tedious.  What SHOULD happen is that lords surrender when they have no chance, in hope of currying your favor...  But large an empire should fall apart from internal threats (including all those foreigners you just absorbed).

Not something for you - or the developers - to decide though, is it?

Frankly, I wish nobles could be captured in battles more often. Sometimes not by other nobles, but by common footsoldiers. Ransom was a big thing.

I mean, I'm sure they would make it fun to manage all of Europe if they could.  But it's kinda out of scope for the game.  It'd be closer to Fate of the World, if it was still a simulator.  Or Risk, if all you want is to paint the map.

The game focuses on personal relationships, and that just inevitably breaks down when you control most of Europe.

Not really. You might want to get your family holding all the titles in your Empire, or turn all the provinces a particular culture, or a particular religion (which isn't Catholicism) or any number of other things.

Just because you can't think of them, doesn't mean they're not there :P

It has been posted on a thread or two when I browsed the paradox forum.

I do like how the combat changes make cavalry important and SR admittedly makes it more so. If SR had a province limit of 4/5 instead of 10(AI is supposed to prefer 3 in vanilla; is moddable), suffered attrition, and the army couldn't go above 60% while shattered I think it'd be dandy.

Just saying, mechanics to slow down expansion have some justification.

No they dont.  If anything expansion should be easier.

Mechanics to make empires fall apart on the other hand are desperately needed.

Yeah I kinda expressed the same thing in the rest of that post.  Totally agreed, it's the better path.

I didn't mean to say that it's impossible to imagine something fun to do to Europa.  Just that it might be beyond the mechanics of a kingdom-centric game focusing on an era where there were no continent spanning empires.

If they could fit it in the UI and mechanics, cool, but I feel like it'd be a different game you know?  That's all.

I like the current paradigm where feudals grow slowly but are stable and tribes grow fast and fall apart, variety is a good thing.

So far in my viking game I'm finding shattered retreats do very little to slow my inevitable conquest of Northern Europe since moral damage is no huge now that I can just sweep anyone aside in battle so far. The massive pact against me has so far only prevented me from waging Holy Wars against pact members, the ones with just a single county I just blitz with mercenaries, retinues and my undead vikings.

The mod event triggered, and now Flykir Draugr af Helheimr is an undead champion of the gods, an eternal ruler to lead the Norsemen in their conquest of all the weak and pitiable southerners.

My kids are by and large dissapointments, none of my sons have become skilled warriors, so I guess I'll just keep spreading out my empire and handing off lands to my children in the hopes that one eventually sires a proper warrior.

I am liking the new council/laws system. I much prefer having to keep just a few senior lords of my lands content rather than needing to keep every elector noble happy to pass laws.

One good thing about the Conclave update is that you can now play as a horse and conquer the Roman Empire for all horsekind.
