I started another game to run alongside my English one to get a taste of the game outside of the "Noob Islands".

So I started as close as possible in Leon and decided to make a Germanic Pagan Roman for my ruler. Within the first five years Middle Francia was absorbed by Western Francia. The massive blue blob soon became embroiled in a number of civil wars however, and I used the opportunity to conquer the de jure counties of Brittany. I didn't even meet any resistance, it was awesome. I was worried that a consolidated France so early would prove to be a game ender, but instead I've got ample opportunities. I've gotten to the third member of my dynasty and they're still fighting each other all over the place. Middle Francia did fight and gain independence for a bunch of scattered counties, and six of the southernmost counties are now Toulouse. There are also peasants revolting everywhere, and the whole western edge of France is fighting to lower crown authority. It doesn't help that they recently had to deal with a regime change. The heir to the throne was poisoned on the celebration of his 16th birthday. (That's actually how it worked out, too. When I got notified that the assassination would take place he was 15. A few days later when he died he was 16.)

Huh!  The cool intro video really focused on negatives, I'm glad there are a lot of very significant benefits.  Particularly for playing along with the council, but vassal/lord relations in general seem to be getting a lot of cool upgrades.  I like anything that makes it more fun to play as a vassal, I think that's one of the game's selling points.

Aye, there comes a point where there's nothing more fun than trying to play as a small family manipulating the world with the tiniest application of influence to create vast sweeping pandemonium from which your talents lead you to rise to the fore. To be always on the precipice of destruction, balancing loyalty with treachery, service with selfishness - it gets even more fun when you try playing as a cultural or religious heathen running amok in a foreign court

The stuff for the free patch included some bad stuff that I'd rather not have at all, even for free (infamy, shattered retreat) but the part you pay for looks like some great content.

Funny how that works.

The council stuff, with important political players who vote, does seem like a big improvement on the previous electoral systems though, which were kind of unfulfilling. As long as it's still possible for a powerful ruler to keep the council unimportant, but it seems like that's the case, based on the thing about how there are things that they can vote on which may or may not be their purview and the laws are being reworked.

Favors are a cool feature, I hope they actually work properly with it and don't just make it a currency for this new stuff only. Since it's DLC content, I fear that that's what they'll do, though.

I'm not sure the new realm peace is actually a deeper system than the old laws.

Not that I would know, but CK2 DLC might not be too hard to acquire in a roundabout fashion that doesn't involve cash changing hands.

The council stuff and especially the favors sound excellent. I hope they add functions for owing and earning favors from the Pope. Such as being able to divorce your haggard wife, but in exchange the Pope requiring you to go crusading.

The Imperium of Scandinavia stretches from Siberia to Ireland in 975 AD. Life is good.

Also, the capital of Danmark is in Hylmyrek, Ireland now. Maybe the king likes the scenery.

Yeah, it seems a powerful ruler can just go All Tyranny on the Counsel's decisions.  More interesting, counsel decisions seem based upon traits, so a Warmongering player can stack the deck with counselors that favor war.  It reminds me of an infinitely better version of the Celestial Empire from EUIII: Divine Wind.

Lot of new info, most of it good but also kind of what you'd expect based on what we already knew. The exception is the mercenaries. I have a suspicion that they'll end up being either something you always want active or never want active.

Unlikely to be feasible. Vassals still will want independence from tyrants, presumably, and they're halving most of the positive opinion modifiers. But you can restructure the government such that the council has no real authority.

I like that the new edumacation system is basically an official interpretation of the GoTmod education work-around. I've been wanting something like that in vanilla.

A shame they're making guardians influence the process less though.

The new laws are also an extension of what HIP does, and I suspect the revisions to how factions work will also be based on Meneth's design. They're basically taking stuff that's well-agreed upon as good features among modders and adding it to the game. They did this before too, when they added personal duels and taking prisoners from after a successful siege.
