Well just started as Brittany , One hundred years later I've absorbed the Karlings broke up the empire of West Francisa(They controlled France, Italy, Northern Spain, parts of Germany, and various other small regions.) ABSORBED the broken empire and I'm now pushing into the Muslims.

So I decided to paint the map purple. And when I say "paint the map", I mean, "conquer every damn title". I started as a count, worked my way up... But I'd really like to have access to crusades to speed things up somewhat.

So my question is: once I've mended the schism, if I convert to catholicism and let it take over until it replace orthodoxy as the main religion, will I have access to crusades?

Also, is there any good way to get courtiers of other religions to press claim on muslims?

Unless they've changed things, Orthodoxy can get Crusades as well. But Crusades will only get called when another religion has taken a title which should "traditionally"* fall in the religion's realm. Here's a table that shows the likelihood of the religious head calling a Crusade/Jihad/Great Holy War for a given region.

So for instance, the Patriarch is likely to call a Crusade if Greece or Byzantion falls to the Muslims, but will never call one for Rome or Russia or Jerusalem. The Pope is virtually guaranteed to call one if the King of Italy is a non-Catholic. Catholicism in general gets a LOT more Crusade options than all the other religions.




* With a few exceptions -- Orthodoxy does not get a Crusade chance on Russia, presumably to prevent endless crusades against the Mongols if the Golden Horde proves historically successful.

It's weird, because they have value for Orthodox, but they also says: "Orthodox, Miaphysite and Nestorian Christians have no crusade equivalent, nor do the Indian religions".

Maybe they get heresies with crusade equivalents?  Or maybe its used for something else.  *shrugs*

Hmm.....I thought maybe Orthodox crusades were a thing introduced in the SoA DLC. Or maybe it's only for Miaphysites although that wouldn't make sense given the areas....Miaphysites would be focused on retaking Ethiopia and Egypt and the Near East.

I found a nice trick today, your vassal's vassals can be imprisoned without risks of rebellions and released for cash.

Or just plain released instead of ransomed if they are count or higher, as it gives you a bonus opinion with ALL your vassals, which is higher the higher ranked the released vassal is.
It is well worth imprisoning a count level vassal and then release it for a global +10 opinion.

In my long-running Abyssinia campaign, I have a vast quantity of Duke-level vassals, belonging to countless different religions and ethnicities. They rebel constantly, but the amount of money I gain from ransom is enough to keep me going in a kind of manageable chaos.

I should make it clear that this is a casual campaign, so I am not playing ironman and when I make a terrible mistake, I savescum i.e. load an earlier savegame. Until things got very, very hairy recently (money supplies drying up etc due to badly timed jihads) I've been playing this for relaxation. No matter how bad it gets though, I'm always able to correct things.
