Every religion has a strength rating called authority, you can check yours in your religion tab and others in the ledger.

When authority is lowered, heresies spread and spawn faster. Furthermore, efforts of converting others to the poor authority religion takes longer.

You can lower authority by losing holy wars, losing temples, etc. Anything that makes your religion weaker.

Essentially as you "win" in CK2, you'll kinda screw over other enemy religions especially if you use holy war a lot and take control of their temples.

Okay, I'm done with my Khazar game. I got an Empire, restored the priesthood, rebuilt the Temple, crushed the Ilkhanate and Golden Horde. Sure I still control a single holy site, and the Arabian Empire is a though nut to crack, but I'm starting to feel like the rest will just be grinding.

Any other cool character to play?

There's an independent greek guy somewhere in southern italy in the old gods start. That's always a fun one.

There's also some mercenary captain with a tiny duchy in the middle of Byzantium. He captured the duchy from Byzantium btw so good luck holding it.

In the Old Gods start, I'd recommend either the Shirazid emirate, in east africa, which must try not to be crushed by Absynnia or the norse chief of Nantes, in Brittany.

If you are feeling particulalry masochist, there are the west africans at pretty much any start.

Hey, I remember this guy. I play as his neighbour and he was my first target (well second, the muslims got a holy war first).

You could try playing as a Zoroastrian in the Old Gods start. You have to expand fairly fast or get crushed by the Muslims to the east and south and the Tengri to the north. They're a bit interesting in that you can marry anybody regardless of how related they are to you, as well as take them concubines- your own children or parents if you particularly want the inbred trait. You also get a +10 relationship bonus with any other Zoroastrian character if you do this.

I think West Africa has the potential be really powerful based on retinues... Their cultural retinue options are, I'm pretty sure, the same 600 retinue-bux that a skirmish retinue costs.  That means your retinue be very large (and honestly a 20% size difference seems to trump almost any other factor, and is particularly important for chain-sieging) and still benefit from the cultural building upgrades.

I don't know if this is actually true, since my west african game ended in a succession quagmire... but since my purely skirmish retinues are rocking even in HI-centric Scandinavia, I'm pretty sure cheap cultural retinues are good.  EXCEPT, last I read, the west african religion gets neither the offensive nor defensive religion buffs.  An acceptable loss, I think...  The bigger issue is probably how undeveloped Africa starts out settlement-wise.

Something weird happened in my current game: I got the loyal eunuch servant event, which was good timing because I had just kicked the teutonic knights out of Sjaelland and ~15 holdings were burning a hole in my vassal relations.
(on that note, some jerk catholic king gave *three* counties to the Teutons over about 5 years.  De-jure Dutch lands, still Norse, right next to my recently formed and reformed Norse Scandinavian Empire.  He only actually has 2 counties left, he gave over half of his lands away... I guess he knew I'd take them anyway)

The weird part is that I gave the eunuch the Duchy of Sjaelland with "Include Lower Titles", but he only received the Duchy and the holdings... I still have all of the counties in between!  Also he had no lands before, yet he formed a *merchant republic*.  Probably related.  I'm not sure it's a bad thing, but it does mean I have two trade republics in my empire now.  The other one, located on the south of Finland, hasn't made any trade posts yet despite me investing two levels into trade practices.  I think the technology hasn't spread to them (despite it being a few decades).

I'm just going to grant the counties and enjoy having a new trade republic with permanent +100 loyalty (at least until his house dies off because HE'S A EUNUCH)

Edit: Oh... I can't grant counties to eunuchs because they can't produce heirs.  *Also* I can't have any more counties in vassal republics (max is 10%).  Well... I guess it's okay though?  He chose one of Sjaelland County's three cities as a capital, and I guess he's totally running a merchant republic.  I'll see if he actually manages to establish trade posts.

The Magyars are so overpowered, it's ridiculous. I took down Hungary, formed Hungary. Got like 35k event troops from it aswell as the 9k event troops I had before. I proceeded to steamroll everything in my vicinity, formed the Carpathian Empire in like 3 years and then took the entire Greek area from the Byzantine Empire, pretty much thee quarters of the empire. Now Rome has called a crusade against me, but I'm going to crush them with my huge event army, still 30k strong, funding, untouched levies and retinue. The only bad thing is that my heir has 3 sons, the bastard.

Does anyone know if English culture will appear at some point in my Old Gods start? Trying to get the Longbow retinues, thinking I'll have to train a Welsh heir.

You need Norman on Anglo Saxon to get English. Afaik, culture is still Anglo Saxon in 1066. Seeing as it's quite hard to get Norman in 867, it's unlikely that english ever exist (only Haestein make Norman appears, by being Norse on Breton/Frankish, and he only survive as long as his event troops are still there)

I got Crusader Kings 2 recently and I've just really gotten into it. I gleefully turned Edinburgh into an independent Jewish Theocracy.

Just discovered that if somebody at my court is a dwarf, I can pin them with the honourary title 'Court Dwarf'.
