I imagine there will be, since that's when their latest game comes out, and they typically put their older games on sale when that happens.

Out of curiosity, what do courtiers bring to the table? I'm not exactly sure as to what their purpose is.
Just think of them as free agents.

You can give them titles if you need to or hire them as councillors and spymasters or what have you.

One thing I wish they would have taken from EU:Rome was the part where you had to actually send courtiers to make diplomatic offers and such. Is was cool.

So, I bought this game on steam summer's, and have yet to download it, but I intend to do it as soon as I get life out of the way. In the meantime, what should I do as a first-time player? Any hints, or good (non sleep-inducing) tutorials?

I got the Game of Thrones mod for this. Obviously played as Ned first. Managed to kill my wife in the Oubliette within the first few years for murdering a family member.

And they are right. I recommend you pick one of the southern ones, though, since north has a land connection with Scotland and Scottish rulers may decide that your lands look good enough to conquer. I started as the Petty King of Munster, the one that's more to the south.

Once you pick him, find a good wife or a soon-to-be wife, appoint the people with best relevant stat (keep in mind to avoid people who hate you a lot) to your Council positions unless they are already on it. Setting up the Council is not really crucial, but you want them to be away on the missions, since they are useless if you don't send them there (save for Marshal, who can lead armies decently).

Once you feel more or less comfortable, declare a war on the province on southernmost end of Ireland. Raise levies, put all of them in one region, select all of them and press the little -> <- button. You now have one single decently big army. Appoint the guys with best stats as leaders of all the flanks, wait until your morale is high then march into the region you declared war on.

With some luck you will win the war. Now you control three provinces, which is pretty good in comparison with the other fiefdoms in Ireland. Now you can start arranging your son's marriage to your sister, murdering six-year-olds and otherwise engaging in common medieval pastimes.

Oh, and a tip - use your Chancellor to Fabricate Claims if you want to conquer a province but those pesky Christian laws get in the way.

I've heard that Ireland is no longer that great as NewbIsland since they get ganked constantly by Norse raiders.  I'll have to check it out sometime; I've barely played since the Old Gods came out.

If you want to learn the game as a Christian, just start in 1066 to avoid that problem.

What do you guys think of starting as a count in the HRE if you're new?  The advantage would be is that you'll likely be left alone.  At least, I was never messed with that much when I played as a count in the HRE.  The disadvantage is you will be restricted in what you can do, depending on crown authority, and the Emperor will raise your levies all the time to fight his wars.  But I'm not sure those disadvantages would be detrimental to learning the game.

The HRE starts with very low crown authority, meaning that HRE vassals can start wars within the realm.  If you're just a count, you could have someone fabricate a claim on you and then claim your county, which would be game over.  So a Duke would probably be better.

My first game was a Byzantine Duke, the Duke of Athens specifically.  They have a different word for that, I forget what it is.  It taught me a lot about how to play the game, but was also boring as anything.  I didn't get anything done.  Then, many games later, I came back and still couldn't get anything done.  That guy has really bad prospects for expansion.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

But the same could happen if you're an independent count.

The problem with playing as a Duke your first game is you'll most likely have vassals who'll be a problem if you're not used to dealing with them.

If your playing as a Byzantine vassal, your best bet for expansion is to back lower crown authority and someones claim to the Empire. A successful claim war will put the law to autonomous vassals.

I've found out that Britanny is great for starters. It's pretty safe, since France rarely, if ever, tries to eat it and even on Old Gods start the only norse you'll have to deal with is a one-province count near you. Also breton cultural retinue includes heavy cavalry.
