I will also note, that you usally want your chancellor to be on the "Fabricate a Claim" mission, as it is a gaurenteed but slow) way to get casus belli's to expand your realm.
That's only if you're a christian trying to fight other christians though.
That depends really, Norse in the Balance Project mod require waiting 5 years between 'holy wars', if you havn't messed with the default settings.  (I don't know about vanilla.)  So getting a Fabricate Claim or two in there speeds things along once you get rolling.  And I believe you still need to fabricate claim to fight your own kind..

Yeah, but if you use balancing mods you'll have to sit around ages and wait for stuff to do no matter what :P

As muslim you can declare war on any adjacent enemy for 50 piety without a casus belli.

In vanilla, there is no waiting period between holy wars (not 100% sure about norse, but for christians and muslims at least). That said, there is the very distinct possibility that every single allied counry will ally and kick your butt if you try it.

So yeah, if you aren't christian you don't really need to be fabricating claims, but it doesn't ever really hurt to do so.

I kinda accidentally reduced my levy-calling ability to minimum (I was going to raise taxes a bunch, didn't realize I wouldn't be able to change the laws again for, what, 2 years??).  Then I noticed I had a good claim on the county west of me, and my son to the north had more men then the guy to the west, so I declared war over a claim I'd picked up a year before by inviting some unhappy courtier in the target's court.

We only outnumbered him about 5 to 4, so of course I lost.  I decided to resign because of the law-change thing.  Basically spent a couple hours learning the interface, and I have to say it's not nearly as hard as I expected!  Going to be trying again for sure.

Pagans have subjugation CB against pagans. Also, I'm a catholic Jerusalem king trapped between Byz and Egypt (Shia). Halp !

For laws : you want to have maximum feudal levies, maximum burgher taxes, and that's all. As taxes and levies are influenced by both laws and opinions, too hard laws are less efficient (or require a higher vassal opinion), especially in bigger realm (you can't ensure your 10 dukes all like you at 90 to make sure law1 is worth it).

A good option for tax raising are church taxes, priest vassals tend not to cause much trouble unless they hate you.

My bishop already almost hated me, I think for being lustful (and also because I accidentally fired him from the council, brought him down to -5 I think).

Well, if you're catholic, they need to have a higher opinion of you than the pope, so, I prefer to have low taxes than no taxes. Though having the pope as a vassal is awesome.

For catholics you get the amazing "free investiture" which nets you a massive bonus with bishops, I think it's around 40. Combine this with some virtues and even arch-prince-bishops will be completely tame.

I once had several bishops that were at 100 opinion with both me and the pope, and thus didn't give me shit.

Assassinate the pope. It seems for every good pope there's 15 lusty, inbred and slow.

Setting up an antipope also works quite well.

I'm playing as the Sultan of Egypt.

And Jerusalem.

The -Coptic- Sultan of Egypt and Jerusalem.

I just need 1 more Arabian province to create the Empire, and I just need to control Antioch and Constantinople to have the Pentarchy under Miaphysite control.

'Course, the Il Khan has appeared and basically whipped Persian and Arabic ass. I'm so boned, I can only bring up a maximum of like 50k people...

At least I own Rome.

Edit: Dependin on how powerful I am (It's like, 1230-1240. Halfway done the game, pretty much.) I'm goin to convert to EU4 when it comes out. I wonder how bein a Copt, with 5 popes and who knows how many autocephalous patriarchs by then, will play out?

Tengri has been reformed, and the Khan is Old Tengri. I wonder if I can convert him to Miaphysite...

Its kind of funny how attacking the Pope/Rome isn't treated any different than hostile actions against normal rulers.  I've held Rome as a Muslim and there was no particular effort to get it back, which is ridiculous.

Nestorian Gengis Khan, and Manichean Aztec emperor (though he converted to catholicism after that).
