I'm pretty sure you need to be orthodox to mend the schism too. And control Rome too.

The thing about republics:

Finally, after a good while, a lot of tyranny and truce breaking modifiers, some severe dishonorable modifiers for showering my enemies (and my fellow patrician families) with assassins, and a single major revolt (I expected more to be fully honest), between a few generation of rulers, I managed to unify and organize my realm, form the Empire of Scandinavia (well, the principality of Scandinavia actually :P), finally press the claim of my anti-pope against the pope, making the pope downright my vassal.

What's the pagan barony?
Othem, a castle in Gotland I keep for the levies. Which is rather strange because Gotland is my starting county as well as christian.

Yeah, republics are fun, and they are suppose to get more fun with the AI fixes in the upcoming patch (well, the beta patch is available, but I'm not currently using it).

Hm okay. I started playing Crusader Kings, and trying to take over one of the Slavic/Finnish chiefdoms in the Old Gods' start. I was able to contain Rurik's advances, grew my chiefdom a little bit and even had a not-depressing military... but then died in a hunting accident, and everything went to hell.

My heir only received all of one territories, one I conquered recently. The title I created went to another heir, and the rest went to a third. What the hell?

I also can't seem to have a real military without mercenaries...

So I'm either really bad at this, or just missing things :( Is there a guide I can read/watch? If not, can you guys throw hints my way?

Gavelkind succession will proceed to murder you and frustrate you until you form a duchy, kingdom or an empire. After that it's not a problem.
If you are Pagan, get a duchy asap. Try to get the biggest duchy there is around you and declare de jure wars on your neighbours. When you become a duke, you will no longer lose territories other than the ones outside your duchy. Same goes with the kingdom.

Same goes with Crown Authority, for the most part.

Did you not have any "title loss" warnings?

When you become a duke, you will no longer lose territories other than the ones outside your duchy. Same goes with the kingdom.
To clarify what he means, he means that when you hold the duchy you can never lose territory in that duchy (unless someone who's going to leave your duchy happens to have some of his land in there). In fact, as soon as you have a duchy, I'm pretty sure you can never lose any county-level vassals or holdings except to other, already independent countries. Same with kingdoms and duchies.

However, if you form or get two duchies or kingdoms, or you just plain happen to be a count, and you don't have some higher rank that you have only one of, you will lose all De Jure vassals and land to whoever Gavelkind set to inherit the land, as your sibblings will be inheriting titles of similar ranks to you. And dukes cannot be vassals to dukes. Same with kings. This is why it may be a good idea to avoid getting multiple duchies or kingdoms on Gavelkind unless you're going to quickly try and become a higher rank or change the succession law.

I did get warnings, but felt quite helpless to do anything about it. I still don't know how.

That makes sense of it, though - I became a count, I believe, but not a duke. So as a Chieftain, I should aim to either stabilize succession OR to form a duchy. That... helps a lot, thanks guys. I'll take any extra hints, though :P

Modify: Also, I suspect I should look into concubines instead of a wife to limit the amount of children I have until I can guarantee succession.

Simply put, there's tiers of vassals/liege :
Empire (purple)
Kingdom (gold)
Duchy (blue)
County (gray)
Barony/Burgher/Bishop (1 holding in a county) (orange-ish)

They can have different names depending on the culture. County and Barony are the only titles where you owns a holding (like a castle).
So, a count has the baron/burgher/bishop as vassal, the duke has the counts as vassals. You can hold several titles (be duke and count).

You need to be at least duke to have counts as vassals. And once a count is vassal to a duchy, the county will be vassal to whoever holds the duchy title (so, your heir when it will pass on to him).

Gavelkind can be weird and hard to learn (even with a duchy/kingdom sometimes). You're better off playing something with primo and catholic as first game (though catholic has annoying casus belli at first).

Only if you mean they have too few. All catholic casi beli will instantly "make sense" to you, if you've read political low-fantasy (or the recently out of favor historical adventure books). Someone holds your lands? kick them out. A person in your lands refuses to be  your vassal? make him. The pope has called a crusade? Join in the fun. Or, for that matter, have a private crusade against the pagans.

Little tip on "Stabilizing" the succession: Blades to the back do wonders to annoying brothers of inferior traits. Don't be afraid of ruining your old man's reputation if he's about to die.

Yup, meant it's not easy to understand how to expand. They're more realistic than gamey.

If you guys don't mind, another question - would marrying heirs into matrileniar marriage remove them from succession?
