Empires are 80%, not 51%. There are often cultural or religious conditions, and small ones (<3 kingdoms) tend to need more (specific) kingdom titles to be held than just the de jure ones.

man... this game is DETAILED. Damn. I am completely and utterly lost. Even after the tutorial. How do I game?!

I kept bouncing off of this game for almost a year until I finally sat myself down and watched some Let's Plays on youtube. The tutorial is insufficient and I've found that going through the wiki, as effective as that is for picking up DF, doesn't really do the job with Paradox strategy games.

The trick is to realize you don't need most of the game to actually play it and semi-survive.

Is there a wiki or something which spells out the requirements for the empires? I am russian culture but I'd like to know which titles are required.

You can check it in game. Just hover your mouse of the 'create' button.

Nevermind, I just formed Russia on 15 September 948. I was wrong about the year before.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.
Quote from: Ze Spy
Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

I bought CK2 in the sale as well (all DLC apart from Old Gods).
I have no clue what to do, but I am King of Ireland now, and have only very little time left to somehow convince my lords to choose my son as the heir (I introduced Tanistry or whatever the name is), because the King is almost 80 now. Still making new babies though. :D

Are weak claims any good? Because you only support someone elses claim, if I see that correctly. I have yet to understand how to grow my empire by marriage (well, my son did marry the princess of Sweden, but she was murdered  had an accident less than a year after the marriage, so he came back home. :( And she was the heir.)

Weak claims can only be pressed against female rulers (if the claimant is male), a regency, or a realm experiencing a succession crisis.  Aside from that, they're the same as strong aside from who gets them.  They're for people low in the line of succession and have limited inheritance to keep your grandpa's second wife's great nephew from supplanting your entire dynasty.

Finally trying my hand at a republic, I'm now at 1198 from first 1066 start (yes, England is Norway's now. Except the city of London. That's mine. :P), playing the republic of gotland, I gotta say, DAMN I make I lot of money. I keep around 50 gold per month, after paying my heavy family dues (oh the cost of having 23 trading posts... :P). I'm pretty sure if were not the death blobs around I'd be the premier power around. I can certainly beat my previous liege, Sweden, around like a ragdoll, and most likely can do the same with Norway (although I'm slightly less certain given they can grab troops from the England as well), and that's even before considering the ridiculous amounts of mercenaries I can hire if I get some time to prepare (and/or arrange the death of some older and richer dynasty members :P).

Hell, my next plans are either conquering Denmark or Conquering Sweden, I just can't decide which. :P

On a sidenote: Just to confirm: The "designated heir" title is exclusive to republics right? I can't suddenly use it to make it ridiculously easier to pick a heir in a feudal kingdom, or can I?

The Byzantines have an equivalent, but apart from them, no.

I always felt the weakest part to Republics was the lack of an actual economy system. Also in that trade port spam, as only one trade port can be built in each area for... some reason...

Totally. For me it's the weakest part of the game, really. I get they didn't want to focus on the economic side of things, but yeah. Still.
